Job Description
The LAN-WAN Engineer works to provide a stable, 24/7/365, access network for business services and offers technical leadership to facilitate the practical and economical use of available technology. The incumbent will also perform activities related to maintaining the corporate Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliances and various interrelated systems. This includes analysis, design, testing, writing RFPs, recommendations, installations, problem research and resolution. This position plans and evaluates existing network systems and makes recommendations for resources required to maintain service levels, identifies and evaluates new products, and also interfaces with vendors on all aspects of the network.
Essential Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
Level I• Maintains a basic level of knowledge of Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies and appropriate peripherals (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols)• Provides 24 x 7 overall Operations/Deployment/Problem support for the Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols)• Provides overall basic operations support for the Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) through daily/weekly/monthly/annually defined maintenance activities.• Provides basic problem determination and resolution for the Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) from monitoring systems and escalated help desk tickets.• Provides basic oversight of the activities of Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) throughout the regions. Confers with management levels to define scope, objectives and overall need of the sites.• Provides and reviews recurring informational reports on Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) usage, performance, and capacity metrics.• Provides basic Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) support for internal and external projects.• Provides basic deployment function for Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols)• Acts as primary contact for the coordination and testing of Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols)• Provides clear and accurate documentation of procedures, problem resolutions and changes. • Works closely with vendors, consultants and other outside professionals regarding Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols).• Consistently demonstrates high standards of integrity by supporting the Lifetime Healthcare Companies' mission and values and adhering to the Corporate Code of Conduct, and Leading to the Lifetime Way values and beliefs.• Maintains high regard for member privacy in accordance with the corporate privacy policies and procedures.• Regular and reliable attendance is expected and required.• Performs other functions as assigned by management.
Level II - In addition to level I responsibilities:• Maintains an intermediate level of knowledge on Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) appropriate to Excellus.• Provides overall intermediate operations support for the Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) through daily/weekly/monthly/annually defined maintenance activities.• Provides intermediate problem determination and resolution on the Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) from both monitoring systems and escalated help desk tickets.• Provides intermediate oversight of the activities of Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) throughout the regions. Confers with management levels to define scope, objectives and overall need of the sites.• Provides and reviews recurring informational reports on Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) performance and capacity metrics and makes recommendations to address tactical and strategic challenges.• Provides intermediate Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) support for internal and external projects.• Works closely with IPM Engineering to ensure that project designs are adequate for production processing (jointly).• Provides intermediate level of deployment functions for the Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols)• Provides technical assistance and guidance to less experienced engineers• Coordinates deployment and operation of Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols).• Introduces small scale process improvement and documentation currency consistently to ensure accurate management of the overall computing and application environment.• Leads smaller size internal projects as directed by Management• Works with all areas to determine the appropriate business need as it relates to interfacing internal/external Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) to our systems.
Level III - In addition to level II responsibilities:• Maintains an advanced level of knowledge on Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) appropriate to Excellus.• Provides overall advanced operations support for the Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) through daily/weekly/monthly/annually defined maintenance activities.• Provides advanced problem determination and resolution on the Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Network s, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) from both monitoring systems and escalated help desk tickets.• Provides advanced support of the activities of Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) throughout the regions. Confers with management levels to define scope, objectives and overall need of the sites.• Provides advanced Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) support for internal and external projects.• Works closely with IPM Engineering to develop project designs that are adequate for production processing (jointly).• Works closely with IPM Engineering to develop proposals and evaluates Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) systems and makes recommendations of those services (jointly).• Provides advanced level of deployment functions for the Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols)• Monitors and reviews contractual agreements, including long and short term planning strategies.• Develops organizational standards for system design, Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) utilization and vendor support.• Recommends and leads large scale process improvements to the Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) Methodology• Leads medium to larger projects as directed by management • Defines scope, objectives and needs for new or revised documentation of existing Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) installations.• Develops standard operating procedures (SOPs) as they relate to the support of Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols).• Provides direction and oversees Intern/Contract/Temp help/Level I &II staff, as needed.• Develops expertise in a specific Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) technology discipline and acts as a company SME in that area.
Level IV - In addition to level III responsibilities:• SME in multiple areas as it relates to Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols).• Serves as technical lead, providing a resource of strong expertise for the resolution of complex Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) and in the research, design, planning, and implementation of Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) solutions.• Solid knowledge of technologies outside of core Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) discipline.• Works to train others as required.
Level V - In addition to level IV responsibilities:• Acts as the Subject Matter Expert across a broad range of Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance Technologies (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) and integration with other technologies as a whole, both internally (Health Plan) and externally (Industry) as a whole.
Minimum Qualifications:

All Levels:
Level I• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or relevant field (or four additional years related work experience in lieu of bachelors).• Related work experience (i.e. Co-Op/Internships) preferred. • Strong analytical abilities• Must possess a high degree of professionalism and display excellent oral and written communications skills. • Ability to exercise good judgment, work independently and maintain a high degree of professionalism is essential.• Requires high degree of technical expertise.
Level II - requires similar qualifications as level I, plus:• Three years of related network/technical experience, with concentrated knowledge in one or more areas• Knowledge of network regulations, industry standards and operational constraints of networks systems. • Demonstrated technical expertise in system hardware and software design is essential. • Continuing education via network and project management courses, seminars and certifications.
Level III - requires similar qualifications as level II, plus:• Five years of related network/technical experience, with concentrated knowledge in one or more areas. • Ability to interface with all levels of management, other plans and outside professionals.• Extensive knowledge of network, telecommunications, and/or computer systems.
Level IV - requires similar qualifications as level III, plus:• Eight years of related network/technical telecom experience, with concentrated knowledge in one or more areas. • Seen as a senior level member from an overall Technology perspective at Excellus.• Possesses the ability to perform all tasks and activities relating to Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Wireless Networks, Cable Plant, and appropriate Security Appliance (switches, routers, access points, firewalls, protocols) monitoring, operations, installation, and maintenance for local and remote locations.• Project management/coordination experience helpful.
Level V - requires similar qualifications as level IV, plus:• Eleven years of related network/technical telecom experience, with concentrated knowledge in one or more areas.
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to travel across regions.• Willingness to provide 24x7x365 support, some weekend work.
The salary range indicated in this posting represents the minimum and maximum of the salary range for this position. Actual salary will vary depending on factors including, but not limited to, budget available, prior experience, knowledge, skill and education as they relate to the position's minimum qualifications, in additional to internal equity. The posted salary range reflects just one component of our total rewards package. Other components of the total rewards package may include participation in group health and/or dental insurance, retirement plan, wellness program, paid time away from work, and paid holidays.
Level I Min: $55,500.00 - Max: $103,000.00
Level II Min: $62,400.00 - Max: $115,800.00
Level III Min: $70,200.00 - Max: $130,300.00
Level IV Min: $78,900.00 - Max: $146,600.00
