Job Description

Mercari is Your Marketplace. We make it super easy to sell (or buy) almost anything. We all have things we don’t use, never used or simply outgrew. But that stuff still has value. Our mission is simple: to make selling easier than buying. And with 50M+ downloads in the U.S. and 350k+ new listings every day, we're just getting started.

Product Analytics is crucial to the success of each of our teams and enables us to make the best data-driven decisions to help our millions of users. At one end, you will require a deep technical understanding of Mercari-specific data infrastructure and how to maneuver it. At the other end, you will bring a deep business understanding to take that data to solve complex business problems. In this senior role, you will help support all the data needs ranging from supporting specific A/B experiments to tracking long-term platform trends. You will drive short-term and long-term improvements to our app through analysis and modeling of quantitative data, uncovering insights and developing strategies that will guide the development of the product. You will build partnerships across Product, Engineering, Finance, and other organizations to maximize the impact of projects. You will always ask and answer the “why?” of our product strategy, always translating them to specific actionable recommendations.

What you’ll do:

Data-driven Business Insights & Recommendations

  • Develop the A|B testing plan, monitor the progress of all tests, and conduct the final evaluation of the statistically significant impact that the test had on the relevant KPIs
  • Analyze and model the behavior of users
  • Create high quality dashboards to raise awareness of the metrics and user behavior for the rest of the team and external stakeholders
  • Identify what metrics matter and build reports that enable the company to leverage that information

  • Be intimately familiar with the product adoption and user acquisition funnels by platform and user segments, and track them closely. Build and maintain these funnels from scratch where necessary
  • Proactively dig into data sets across categories, price points, user behavior, etc. to identify new opportunities for growth
  • Conduct deep dives & analytical investigations into inconsistent trends in data
  • Continually ask “why” and show creativity to build hypotheses and test them using data
  • Regularly present your data-backed recommendations to senior leadership with a view to inform their decision making

Data Infrastructure & Management

  • Work closely with Data Engineering teams to ensure the integrity and robustness of the Mercari data infrastructure
  • Establish the analytical framework for the team and take ownership of the reporting of the data to external stakeholders
  • Establish best practices and protocols in experimentation and data analysis, and institutionalize them
  • Support new feature development by ensuring that relevant events are being tracked and the data pipelines are always up-to-date
  • Actively participate in the wider analytics community within Mercari and help us continually improve our decision making capabilities

Mentorship & Growth

  • Mentor and inspire the Data Analytics team, setting high standards for best practices and timely insights
  • Help craft team KPIs and align them to the larger company goals. Be a thought leader for the team in strategic/growth discussions

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to influence and impact project outcomes
  • Deep understanding of the statistics that govern A|B testing
  • Experience developing time series analysis and predictive modeling
  • Strong skills in delivering easy-to-understand written and verbal presentations to a wide audience
  • Understanding of the business fundamentals of online marketplaces including network effects
  • Above all, you’ll need to be self-directed, genuinely curious about our users/business and willing to stand behind your own point of view (backed by data)
