Job Description

Have you noticed that when you go to the doctor, often no one there can tell you what it will cost? If you think that’s as problematic as we do, join us in our mission to fix it.

We are currently seeking a Lead Data Engineer to join our team remotely!

Position Overview:

This role reports directly to the Chief Product Officer. You will lead the transformation, loading, management, and analysis of data–both in batch and real-time–that we gather from doctors, patients, government organizations such as Medicare, and insurance companies. You will collaborate closely with the Engineering team to architect these data pipelines as they grow in volume and number over time. Lastly, you will augment our analytics layer on top of this data, driving new and enhanced visualizations as feedback is captured from our customers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Architect/design and build data driven solutions
  • Analyze tradeoffs of various types of data stores and solutions
  • Consult/guide developers to build data intensive solutions
  • Develop integrations and configure interfaces with APIs, HL7, FHIR, and other healthcare standards to transform data sets into our system, powering automated workflows and analytical applications for healthcare providers
  • Establish automated jobs for integrating data from proprietary systems (e.g. Electronic Medical Record and healthcare billing systems) and public data sets (e.g. Medicare)
  • Design and optimize standard interfaces for specific data source systems
  • Build and implement monitoring processes for all data pipelines
  • Work on design and scaling of analytical pipelines on top of data that use relational databases
  • Provide leadership across our small but growing Data Engineering team

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Proven experience designing data intensive systems
  • Experience with relational and non-relational data stores
  • Experience with Cloud technologies
  • Experience with designing distributed systems
  • Proven experience working with Microsoft technology stack (e.g. .NET, C#, SQL Server)
  • Delivery of data analysis systems (e.g. from database design through visualizations)
  • Development of automated ETL processes for SQL databases
  • Experience with various data formats: .txt/.csv, Excel, XML, JSON (bonus: familiarity with HL7, healthcare EDI, and REST APIs)

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in a highly quantitative field (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Operations Research, etc.) or equivalent experience (Advanced Degree preferred)
  • 7+ years of software development with focus on data driven systems
  • 7+ Experience working with relational and non-relational data stores

Role Progression:

As our second Data Engineering team member you will have the opportunity to grow as our organization grows, scaling Data Engineering for a fast-growing company with staff across the US.

Why MD Clarity:

  • Our team is experiencing high growth and is at the forefront of innovation while loving a little bit of ambiguity along the way!
  • We are remote-first, with hybrid options at our offices in Seattle and NYC if you like to be in-person.
  • Competitive Benefits Package: Medical, Dental, & Vision premiums 100% covered for you and any dependents; 401(k) with employer matching; monthly wellness credit; employer HSA contributions; and more
More about MD Clarity:

MD Clarity is a social-impact-driven software company animated by two guiding principles: 1) that patients have a right to know what the financial impact will be on them when getting care; and 2) that doctors, nurses, and physician assistants deserve to be paid fairly by health insurers.

Our workflow automation software makes the healthcare experience easier and more transparent for patients and providers, and our products are already used by healthcare organizations that together serve hundreds of thousands of patient visits annually. We’re profitable and recently raised a new round of growth capital to accelerate adoption and scale our impact on the healthcare system.

Our fast-growing team combines decades of healthcare technology experience with engineering and business talent from Microsoft, Stanford, Phreesia, Spotify, GitHub, Dartmouth, EY-Parthenon, Harvard, Deloitte, Vanderbilt, UPenn-Wharton, and Northwestern, among others. We’re distributed among our offices in Seattle and New York City and many fully remote roles. In addition to our shared passion for improving patients’ healthcare experience, we’re united in valuing an inclusive workplace that empowers all with the autonomy, connection to the mission, and flexibility needed to innovate.
