Lead Data Scientist - Office of the Customer

Summary

The Office of the Customer team works to advance integrated and empathic strategies and plans for and with our customers now and in the future. Customer Strategy and Customer Experience sit within the scope for this Customer Center of Excellence, including State of the Customer, Customer Growth Innovation, Customer Experience Management, and Competitive Landscape monitoring.

As Lead Data Scientist, you are joining a community of analysts, data scientists, and software engineers who work collaboratively to drive business value via our rich first-party data.

The Lead Data Scientist on the Office of the Customer (OC) will own development of Operational Sales Drivers (Project Beacon) from discovery to production in partnership CSA and CR functions and will provide mentorship to junior DSR talent. An ideal candidate has significant experience delivery insights from machine learning solutions, familiarity with pipeline best practices, and is passionate about shaping strategy and thought leadership across a complex matrix organization.

Responsibilities:

• Drive the roadmap for Operational Sales Drivers (Project Beacon) through all phases:

o Discovery: Evaluate past data assets and codebase, define outages and source solutions. Identify new data assets from current Kroger and 84.51 solutions.

o Development: Convert or create methodology to execute predictive analytics integrating market, operational, customer, associate, and other identified metrics in compliance with all How to Data Science best practices to deliver a robust automated solution, inclusive of MLOps.

o Adoption: In partnership with OC leadership, Champion solution through complex matrix organization with various stakeholders of differing technical backgrounds.

• Apply statistical and analytical techniques to large datasets to uncover insights that shape better business decisions.

• Translate important technical information clearly to upper management to steer organizational direction, to teammates as part of project work, to other data scientists to guide their work, and to less technical functions and stakeholders.

• Scope and manage projects from beginning to end to ensure that projects are delivered on time, within budget and to brief specification.

• Lead shaping and delivering analytical plans in support of client or stakeholder roadmap, ensuring that best practices and innovative ideas are adopted.

• Coach and mentor and develop junior data scientists on project execution, results delivery, domain skill development, and analytic techniques.

• Proactively manage the development of best practice and knowledge management, and champion the capture and sharing of knowledge across the data science community.

• Guide and direct data scientists in realizing efficiencies and creating standard processes, such as automation of code lines, removing manual tasks, or re-engineering existing processes to make them more efficient.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, economics, or similar discipline
  • 4+ years of experience in extracting insights from large databases, translating market research into actionable solutions and presenting findings and recommendations to clients or stakeholders
  • 2+ years of experience using advanced algorithms, programming languages, or technologies in the development of technical analytics solutions or capabilities.
  • 4+ years of experience in tech consulting, retail or related professional services
  • Hands-on experience using Python and PySpark to develop analytical solutions.
  • Experience with data wrangling, data cleaning and prep, dimensionality reduction.
  • Experience with Big Data concepts, tools, and architecture

Skills

  • Strong open-source programming (Python, R, SQL), cloud platform, and statistical package skills. Knowledge of AI/ML tools and applications to solve business problems.
  • Ability to create computationally efficient solutions, applying techniques from statistics, machine learning, and relevant domain
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly on technical topics.
  • Data visualization skills and ability to present technical solutions to non-technical audience.
  • Strong analytical, creative problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Natural curiosity that welcomes and embraces change and willingness to try new things and to fail.
  • High level of independence; ability to make time-sensitive decisions rapidly and solve urgent problems without escalation.
  • Strong time and project management skills; the ability to balance multiple, simultaneous work items and prioritize as necessary.
