Since 1987, the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) has set the standard in certification, continuing education, solutions and tools for health and fitness, sports performance and sports medicine professionals. NASM has pioneered evidence-based health and fitness solutions that optimize physical performance and allow individuals to achieve a variety of fitness activity goals.

NASM is seeking a Lead Developer to join the team. This role is responsible for leading a team for developing, testing, implementing, and maintaining software application presentation in a for-profit organization utilizing multiple technologies. Training and coaching direct reports and ensuring they are all using best practices and expanding their knowledge base.

Responsibilities:

  • Train and educate direct reports in order to continue the success of our website.
  • 2+ direct reports.
  • Coordinate with other Onsite and Offsite teams to make sure everyone is on the same page
  • Develop and support enhancements and new functionality for Ascend platforms using cutting edge technology.
  • Work closely with Platform Analysts, Scrum Masters, Quality Assurance Engineers, Product Owners, and other cross-functional resources to define, develop, and refine project deliverables.
  • Create front-facing pages and views that are responsive in nature, for use across multiple platforms including mobile devices and cross-browser compatibility.
  • Develop and evaluate pages and views to include web accessibility standards and Section 508 compliance in order to accommodate for visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive disabilities.
  • Participate in all relevant agile ceremonies for each project iteration including story tasking, task estimating, and story ownership.
  • Work collaboratively with matrixed DevOps team members to own solutions. This includes project execution as well as maintenance, monitoring, and service for the respective solution(s).
  • Provide technical expertise and troubleshooting to support production issues through weekdays and weekends
  • Participate in code reviews and adhere to defined coding standards and guidelines, both in developing code and in assessing code during a review.


Job Specifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a computer related field or equivalent work experience (5+ years)
  • 2+ years of managing team of Developers
  • 6+ years of relevant experience in user experience development for web-based applications
  • 5+ years preferred in CSS, jQuery, JavaScript and JSON using CMSs
  • Experience in Agile based development methodology or similar formal methodologies
  • Experience with a programming language used at Ascend

  • Demonstrated organizational and teamwork skills, strong attention to detail, and a willingness to participate in collaborative development projects
  • Excellent problem solving skills and an ability to translate a business scenario into a technical solution
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to participate in iteration planning discussions and provide estimations on tasks for stories
  • Understanding of the foundations of good software development
  • Possess a customer-focused mindset

This position requires that the employee be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, unless an exemption has been granted by Ascend Learning for a religious, health-related or other legally mandated reason, which will be considered on a case-by-case basis in accordance with applicable law. Ascend Learning's current policy also requires that individuals visiting our offices be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
