The Lead Engineer is at the specialist level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve complex problems, manage work , and provide leadership to others in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision and increased latitude for un-reviewed work. The Lead Engineer serves in lead roles providing guidance to others. They are also expected to have advanced skills and have the ability to work independently.

This is a Lead Engineer position within the Distributed Energy Group (DEG). The DEG Team supports integration of renewable energy in the distribution grid by ensuring technical and regulatory compliance of Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

This Lead Engineer role will be responsible for engineering and in-depth technical support in the areas of Distributed Generation (DG) interconnection studies along with providing contractor oversight for the analysis and design of microgrid and solar system impact studies. The candidate needs to have a technical background and is comfortable working in an agile, fast-paced, technical environment.

Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to the following

  • Serving as the subject matter expert and providing technical support for all Distributed Generation projects and studies.
  • Collaborating with the DG Manager and Study Engineering team to deliver technical support to project owners throughout the process of evaluating the DG project interconnection.
  • Ensuring that key regulatory interconnection standards related to timelines, and communications, among other criteria are achieved.
  • Facilitating direct communication and customer support to DG project owners related to required regulatory communications and other key technical options and milestones.
  • Providing mentoring, technical guidance and engineering staff development to DG staff, Contract Engineering Support, and Distributed Energy Technology (DET)
  • Development and oversight of work plans, processes, training, and best practices to implement DG programs or initiatives
  • Performance of DG studies, and review of studies by other staff, with respect to specific jurisdictional requirements for effective interconnection to the grid.
  • Active participation on special assignments, including representation of DG among other organizations within Duke Energy
  • Liaison to Distribution Standards, Capacity Planning, Distribution Protection Automation & Controls (DPAC), Distribution Control Center (DCC), DER Technical Standards, Transmission, etc. for Distributed Generation - related issues


Basic/Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree
  • In addition to required degree, minimum of eight (8) years of engineering experience
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE)

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in the utility industry
  • Deep understanding of the distribution system with its design, planning, operation, customer impacts related to Distributed Generation interconnection
  • Extensive and up to date experience with at least one of the following software/tools: CYME for power flow analysis; or PSCAD for electromagnetic transient analysis
  • Demonstrated experience in training, supervising, and managing contractors performing technical studies
  • Skilled in engineering theories and principles
  • Skilled in the practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations
  • Proficient in principles of project management
  • Experience and demonstrated written and oral communication skills, including the ability to present information, facilitate meetings and provide direction to others
  • Demonstrated effective team work skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal day-to-day direction while maintaining performance expectations
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds


Working Conditions
  • Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
