Job Description

Lead a team of kind, creative engineers in building web apps while deeply collaborating with Product, Design, and the business at large.

Three reasons you should apply to Clyde Engineering

  1. The People: A kind, thoughtful, brilliant crew. Be supported as both an engineer and a human being. Build your skills, ship code with pride, and work with earnest people.
  2. The Product: We love to build design-detailed, best-in-class experiences. Clyde has discovered something good in ecommerce with more to come. We just raised $41M (series B), so it’s a good time to jump in and help us build a company we’ll be proud of.
  3. Our Character: Humility. Thoughtfulness. Support. Healthy hours. A clear career ladder. Personal and professional growth. And the pride of shipping delightful code with nice people while learning and growing every day. Also, we’ll pay you.

Requirements

Our Tech Stack, and where it meets your skills

You don’t have to know all these things, but what you don’t know you should be excited to learn.

  • Cross-browser support: Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge
  • Responsive Design – devices come in all shapes and sizes
  • Accessibility and Inclusive Design – equal access for everyone
  • Healthy API creation and optimization

Our web apps are backed by healthy platforms…

  • Node.js + Koa, but experience with other node-adjacent frameworks is also cool

  • Elasticsearch. Have a better way to do spin up search indexes? We’d love to hear it
  • Redis. Because it’s fast
  • Shopify, BigCommerce, Magento, SFCC. We integrate with them and others
  • Kubernetes, Docker, AWS. DevOps skills are appreciated

As a Lead Engineer, a team will look to you to…

  • Encourage and model healthy team dynamics and psychological safety
  • Support team members without micromanaging the completion of work
  • Partner with a Product Manager to define and scope work, breaking down into iterable milestones and parallel tracks where appropriate
  • Anticipate projects that may require impactful technical decisions and coordinates discussion, understanding, and consensus on an approach
  • Have a high-level understanding of all work undertaken by the team and can represent it at a departmental level
  • Balance the distribution of work amongst team members, being mindful of both individual capacity, capability, and knowledge sharing
  • Cultivate a culture of quality on the team, ensuring that engineers check their own work and that code reviews are of a high standard
  • Ensure the team is considering accessibility, performance, code readability, responsive design, and usability in all projects

And you’ll do it with a team, so…

  • Be supportive of those around you
  • Be open to help from others
  • Be able to write clearly: in code, documentation, and Slack conversations
  • Be comfortable leading stand ups, retros, and other lightweight versions of agile practices
  • Be comfortable saying “I don’t know know” so that you and your crew can learn something new together

Additional Requirements

  • NYC-based
