Job Summary:
Coordinates and directs the activities of Nuclear Medicine Technologists, procedures, services, patient care and monitoring, and quality control of all of the Nuclear Medicine and PET-CT Departments at a regional level. Oversees Nuclear Medicine and PET-CT departments accreditation and all State and Federal Regulations. Monitors quality in the Nuclear Medicine and PET-CT department, In the absence of manager, performs limited responsibilities of that position, as delegated. In addition, operates Nuclear Medicine and PET-CT Imaging equipment to perform exams in accordance with instructions of the Radiologists and/or designated physician, using knowledge of radiopharmaceutical techniques and procedures, anatomical and pathological relationships, and the contour and composition of body tissue. Initiates IVs and monitors dose administration under direction of a physician. Makes members/patients and their needs a primary focus of one's actions; develops and sustains productive member/patient relationships by building rapport. Actively seeks information to understand member/patient circumstances, expectations, needs and resolves problems.
Essential Responsibilities:
- This position, knows and complies with all Kaiser Permanente quality, safety, and emergency policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice in every interaction with patients, colleagues, providers, and leadership.
- Ensures patient safety in the preparation and provisioning of care related to but not limited to medications, procedures, infection prevention, fall prevention, including consistent use of two patient identifiers and procedural time outs.
- Reports safety hazards, accidents and incidents, and unsafe working conditions promptly.
- Coordinates and directs the activities of Nuclear Medicine and PET-CT technologists, maintaining services in accordance with departmental policies, procedures, State and Federal regulations, accreditation, as well as quality control standards.
- Reviews, collaborates, and implement protocols, procedures, and Imaging guidelines to promote efficiency and quality.
- Ensures equipment and document are updated.
- Assists manager in scheduling and assigning work for departmental personnel; works with manager to assure adequate staffing for daily operations.
- Assists team to identify ways to work in emergent patients and optimize schedules.
- Instructs, observes, and provides assistance in solving technical problems and performing difficult procedures.
- Reviews Radiologists feedback, makes recommendations, and provides training as needed.
- Ensures safe handling of equipment and radioactive material and that Nuclear Medicine and PET-CT protocols and standards are being followed.
- Assists manager with communication to staff, may assist with and co-facilitate department huddles.
- Utilizes interpersonal skills to support, motivate, and promote teamwork.
- Serves as point of contact for the Nuclear Medicine and PET-CT department for providers, schedulers, members, and others seeking assistance.
- May assist Nuclear Medicine and PET-CT Technologist and manager in resolution of escalated patient/member concerns.
- Instructs patient in preparing for examinations; explains, in a courteous manner, all procedures to be performed.
- Starts IVs and administers medications and isotope dose, as necessary, under direction of physician.
- Operates Nuclear Medicine and PET-CT equipment to perform exams, using knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
- Monitors images and makes necessary adjustments to obtain optimal images according to Radiologist designated protocols.
- Confers with Radiologist to establish requirements for non-standard examinations.
- Follows all established exam protocols.
- Performs all the responsibilities of Nuclear Medicine and PET-CT Technologists, including duties associated with the Radiology Information System by tracking patient procedure, supplies, and medication.
- Uses Picture Archive Computerized System including post processing, isotope ordering, and transmitting images according to established department protocols.
- Maintains daily / weekly/ monthly quality control of all Nuclear Medicine and PET-CT equipment and evaluates image quality.
- Maintains work area in a clean and orderly condition.
- Provides assistance in coordinating vendor services.
- Monitors the utilization of safety equipment practices, radiation protection and proper patient screening.
- May require handling bio/hazardous and radioactive waste.
- Performs all other related duties as delegated by Manager, such as assisting manager in compiling statistical data and prepares reports relating to operating costs and services rendered.
- May work with students.
- In the absence of manager, may sit on various Regional and National Quality Committees as subject matter experts.
- Participates in all ACR accreditation requirements as required.
- In addition to defined technical requirements, accountable for consistently demonstrating service behaviors and principles defined by the Kaiser Permanente Service Quality Credo, the KP Mission as well as specific departmental/organizational initiatives.
- Also accountable for consistently demonstrating the knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors necessary to provide superior and culturally sensitive service to each other, to our members, and to purchasers, contracted providers and vendors.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience
- Minimum three (3) years of experience as a Nuclear Medicine or PET-CT Technologist, with working knowledge of the technical and physical aspects including quality control and safety procedures.
Education
- High School graduation or equivalent.
- Successful completion of a radiological training program approved by the American Medical Association.
