About the Position: Position is TERM not to exceed 6 years. May be extended in 1 year increments up to 8 years and may be converted to a permanent position without further competition. Must meet requirements to conversion to permanent.

- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must be able to obtain and sustain state certification for the NCIC (National Crime Information Center) terminal.
- Expected to maintain high standard of conduct, assessed for social adjustment, emotional stability, sound judgement, dependability, flexibility in adjusting to changes, ability to work under pressure and have positive attitude toward duties.
- Drug testing position; mandatory random drug testing is required.
- Shift work is required, or a change in shift work may be necessary. Hours of work encompass fluctuating tours of duty to include evenings, nights, week-ends and holidays. Overtime may be required.
- Must be proficient in the use of assigned firearms/weapons, pass an initial qualification and must qualify semi-annually thereafter.
- Must undergo and pass entry level and annual medical exam of physical, emotional and mental stability.
- Must successfully complete security guard training.
- Must be trained and maintain current required certification in CPR techniques and must know first aid. May act as a first responder in a medical emergency.
- May be required to wear chemical protection masks, gloves, and other protective equipment, and may be required to be certified in the use of aerosol irritants and baton.
- Required to maintain physical conditioning and pass an entry level and annual physical agility test (PAT). This entails running 1.5 miles in 17:30 and performing 19 push-ups in 2 minutes.
- Must be fully qualified to operate a government vehicle. Must possess and maintain a valid state drivers license.
- Must wear the Department of Army Security Guard (DASG) uniform.
- Must obtain and maintain applicable certifications in operating various electronic equipment and sensors.
- Must not have any medical condition that precludes the wearing of a chemical protective mask and over-garments.
- Must be able to perform as a member of the installations overall security response capability. This may require the carrying/deployment of riot baton, protective shield and employment of non-lethal ammunitions.
- Position is covered by the terms of the Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968. Persons convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence are not eligible for this position.
- May be required to serve a one year trial period.
Qualifications
Competition for Security Guard positions is restricted by law to persons entitled to veterans' preference as long as such applicants are available for appointment. Applications will be accepted from non-preference eligible; however, these applications will not be considered if preference eligible applicants are available.
In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized experience: One year of specialized experience which includes work with federal, state, municipal, local, or private protective organization 1) interpreting and applying access control standard operating procedures, written orders, laws and regulations to determine whether appropriate authorization for access exists; 2) safeguarding personnel, information, and critical assets; 3) using physical access control equipment; 4) responding to traffic incidents, emergency situations and security threats ; and 5) providing information and recommendations regarding operational effectiveness to higher level management. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education
