Lead User Experience Designer

Position Overview

Outset is looking for an energetic, creative, and collaborative designer to ensure a satisfying and streamlined user experience while interacting with our flagship hemodialysis machine (Tablo) and our customer facing cloud-based digital product web portals (TabloHub and MyTablo). The ideal candidate possesses skill sets in the areas of interaction design, visual design, and information architecture, can conduct analytical user research, perform prototype development, and engage in user testing to deliver creative and effective user experiences.

This individual will work closely with their upstream product management and human factors engineering counterparts to understand the market, user, and clinical needs; with engineering to translate those needs into an empowered and satisfying user experience for patients, clinical staff, and service professionals; and with downstream commercialization teams for training and marketing material development. The lead user experience designer shall own the user experience for the customer web portal, TabloHub and MyTablo, and related digital product pipeline, while aiding in the GUI interface work on the Tablo Console.

Essential Job Functions

• Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, designers, human factors engineers, developers, and other stakeholders to clearly define and develop innovative solutions for Outset’s customer web portal, TabloHub and MyTablo, and related digital products
• Create design deliverables in a hands-on capacity, including early mockups, wireframes, interactive prototypes, and high-fidelity designs for both web and mobile applications

• Develop and maintain detailed design documentation, including visual assets and written specifications that communicate design intent and detailed interaction details to development and test engineers
• Coordinate closely with developers and testers during the product development process to ensure features are implemented in accordance with design

• Engage in stakeholder/user interviews and other research to clearly define user needs for proposed features

• Collaborate with other designers to define and maintain product design systems in alignment with design best practices and Outset brand guidelines
• Act as the ‘voice of the user’ in cross-functional project teams and reinforce a human-centered design approach across the organization

• Understand and incorporate complex regulatory, business, and technical requirements into design decisions to maintain privacy, accountability, accessibility, and user control

• Ensure all user-interface design requirements are met as part of the product development process
• Ensure adherence to Company Quality policy and procedures
• Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements:

• BS in Visual Design, Computer Science with human-computer interface (HCI) emphasis, Human Centered Design, Interaction Design, related field or relevant experience.
• Experience/familiarity with CSS, HTML and responsive design
• Experience collaborating with remote development teams
• Experience creating and working with design systems, style guides and pattern libraries
• Ability to travel up to 30% time (US)

Desired Qualifications: 

• MS strongly preferred.
• 8 years’ relevant experience. Ideally with 4-5 years Interaction Design experience in a regulated industry; medical device industry experience a plus
• Thorough knowledge of user experience (UX) best practices, interactive design principles, information architecture and web accessibility principles
• Proficiency with common design tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite, and use of these tools for creating low-, medium-, and high-fidelity GUI prototypes
• Strong experience in cross-functional product development processes, from concept definition through product launch
• Strong team player who can incorporate input from others and can generate consensus through inclusion
• Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment
• Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal in English) and able to present ideas clearly in a public setting
• Excellent interpersonal, social, negotiation, and decision-making skills to build effective relationships across a wide variety of stakeholders
• Good organizational skills and ability to meet tight deadlines in an environment of competing priorities Ability to routinely work on multiple tasks with multiple people while effectively prioritizing
