Legal Specialist Summary This position will perform wide-ranging functions within the Legal Department, serving a variety of business clients with significant client interaction. Confidentiality and discretion are critical to the role. This position may be expected to provide, under attorney supervision, accurate and timely services with respect to contracting (including but not limited to provider contract amendments, confidentiality agreements, or Business Associate Agreements, including first pass reviews), while identifying risk for more senior staff and management and compliance with appropriate corporate policies and business unit procedures. Further, this position may be expected to provide services related to insurance products as known in the health insurance field. These responsibilities include being responsible for technical aspects of product filings including processing benefit materials through appropriate government regulators, tracking submission progress, and participating actively in team meetings on related topics. As needed, drafting and editing, under attorney supervision, of benefit materials (certificates of coverage, subscriber contracts and riders) is also part of the job duty. In addition, this position may be responsible for tracking and supporting contracts, corporate documents, correspondence, regulatory filings and licensing obligations, and other legal and business documents by using databases, logs or spreadsheets. Prepares needed materials in PowerPoint, Excel, Word. This position may be expected to have a working knowledge of litigation processes (class action; bankruptcy; subpoenas; other) and be able to efficiently use LexisNexis or Westlaw. This position involves conducting legal research and summarizing such research and findings for senior staff as needed. The maintenance of legal files and an electronic legal research library is also part of this position's role. This position will be expected to support MVP's in-house attorneys for special projects. This position also works closely with other teams to address requests for proposals (RFPs). Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications

Minimum Education

Associate degree required or the equivalent of such degree gained through experience working in a law firm, government, health insurance, or in-house role.

Bachelor's degree preferred.

Minimum Experience

Minimum of three years of progressive experience in at least two of the following areas: health insurance product experience (product development, product marketing, product implementation/operations, or product communications); contracting (confidentiality agreements, Business Associate Agreements, Statement of Work); analyzing regulatory requirements; compliance work in an insurance setting (preferably health insurance).

Knowledge of MVP's business processes and structure preferred. Prior experience in managing/leading projects preferred.

  • Customer service focused with ability to work/communicate effectively (orally and in writing) with a cross-functional team at all levels of management
  • Strong written communication skills with ability to produce clear, concise and accurate communications
  • Comfortable to recommend and develop process improvements
  • Manages projects and assignments that support the Legal Department's efforts to help the Company fulfill its regulatory obligations and client expectations. Ability to drive projects to completion
  • Participate actively in team and other department meetings
  • Working knowledge of standard contract language and when to escalate decisions
  • Excellent computer and software skills including but not limited to: MS Office: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook.
  • Experience with LexisNexis or Westlaw

Some travel, including overnight, to work with staff in MVP's regional offices required

Position - hybrid, based in Schenectady, NY or Rochester, NY.
