What You’ll Be Doing

Having grown substantially in the last two years with no sign of slowing down, BeatStars and the BeatStars Legal Team is looking for a driven Attorney and/or JD with proven ability, who is able to navigate the business on its exciting journey and successfully manage growth, as well as the challenges this presents. Our ideal candidate will be charged with negotiating and drafting BeatStars Agreements. You will also be tasked with contributing to BeatStars legal operations, company policies, strategy, and coordinating technology implementations. This position reports directly to BeatStars Associate Legal Counsel. In addition to working on the rest of the BeatStars Legal Team, the role involves regular communication with other departments (e.g., Marketing, Finance, C-Suite, People & Talent Acquisition, Music, Engineering, and Product on important topics raised by company developments). Furthermore, you will be charged with staying educated and up to date on music industry trends, technology trends, business trends, and any potential legal obstacle that may arise which could affect the present and future of BeatStars. You will be required to function at the highest degree of precision, at a fast pace, in collaboration with Associate Legal Counsel and outside Legal Counsel.

Responsibilities:

  • As Legal Associate you will drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex and often first-of-kind Agreements.
  • Supporting various aspects of the deal-making process
  • Advising and executing on strategy
  • Briefing the BeatStars Associate Legal Counsel, and BeatStars Leadership Team on new laws, agreements, and developments. 
  • Maximizing Legal Department Implementations/Operations
  • Assisting with management, review and drafting of Company Agreements, Platform Licenses, and BeatStars Website Legal
  • Assisting with the maintenance of our TOS and Privacy Policy as laws, regulations, issues arise, and our new products come to Market
  • Responding to Support Legal Issues and DMCA Legal Issues
  • Following up on Contract Completions and Payments for our Publishing Members
  • Processing Takedowns for Copyright and Trademark Infringement
  • Assisting with Maintaining our Legal Repository
  • Assisting with Tracking Departmental Metrics and doing Quarterly Reports
  • Researching Platform Fraud, Laws,  Regulations, and Developments that could affect the Community, Company, our Team, and our Products 
  • Writing Articles for the Community
  • Collaborating to develop training materials for the BeatStars Team
  • Negotiating deals for the digital exploitation of audio music content and compositions 
  • Drafting agreements and other documentation (e.g., summaries) as part of such deals 
  • Reporting on developments relating to specific deals and intellectual property law and policy to BeatStars Senior management, including the Associate Legal Counsel and other C-suite executives, as well as to various BeatStars business units
  • Contributing to internal discussions on new digital strategy and policies relating to developments in business and the law, as well lead in authoring and enforcing the resulting policies
  • Managing and respond to inquiries from BeatStars departments and international affiliates on matters related to BeatStars digital deals, digital policies, and a host of related issues/matters

 

What You’ll Need

  • At least one year of direct work experience in-house at a music, SAAS, or tech company (in a recorded music or music publishing division, media company or technology company licensing music or other content), or at a law firm
  • Understanding of and experience with licensing, digital media and intellectual property law
  • Strong negotiation skills and experience (in particular, the ability to lead and manage negotiations with a multiplicity of parts), as well as strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Refined and well-practiced drafting skills (in particular, the ability to develop creative solutions in areas with evolving legal guidance)
  • Strong interpersonal skills and business acumen
  • Attention to detail and the ability to manage a high-volume workload efficiently and smoothly
  • Strong familiarity with new technology developments and related legal issues
  • J.D. 
  • Active license to practice law in at least one state in the U.S.
  • Bonus points for:
    • music/publishing/marketplace industry experience
    • relevant qualification, experience and training in Compliance, Data and Privacy
