Legal Desk Editor (Level 1 Journalist)

Reuters is looking for an experienced Legal Desk Editor for our expanding, entrepreneurial U.S.-based legal news team. The successful candidate will have a substantial background in business or general news editing as well as legal subject-matter expertise and a drive for excellence. He or she possesses superior writing skills and is comfortable working both at high speed and in depth. The position demands an understanding of the needs of our wide audience, from global professionals to the world's biggest media organizations The role will be based in the U.S.

About the Role
As the Legal Desk Editor, you will:

• Engage with and elevate a wide variety of news stories, with a focus on our most urgent and ambitious journalism
• Enforce our high standards for accuracy, clarity, fair comment, impartiality and sourcing
• Work effectively with reporters to improve copy
• Coordinate with other Reuters editors and the production team
• ensure that headlines, ledes and nut grafs are clear and engaging Spot grammatical and factual errors
• Actively contribute ideas for upgrading work flow and content

About You
You're a fit for the role of Legal Desk Editor if you have:

• Five or more years of experience as an editor or copy/production editor at a major news organization
• Proven skills editing ambitious stories on legal topics such as corporate litigation, the business of law and the judiciary
• Superb copy editing skills, including with complex legal and socially sensitive stories
• Tact and skill in rewriting for accuracy and clarity
• Strong digital and multimedia expertise and familiarity with the needs of a digital audience
• Experience optimizing stories for search (SEO)
• Savvy news judgment and ability to shape a story to bring the essential elements and impact of the news to the fore
• Ability to make quick and sound decisions in a fast-paced environment; stellar communication skills and a strong team ethic
• Past experience working as a reporter is a plus
