Literacy Coach - (Contractor), Champaign, IL
Job Description
Amplify is seeking a FT contract Literacy Coach for a school-year engagement starting July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024. The ideal candidate is an experienced education leader who has deep knowledge of the science of reading and aligned, high quality instructional materials and has coached teachers and leaders in support of bringing more effective literacy instruction to life in classrooms.
Primary responsibilities:
The Literacy Coach will provide both coaching and training support to teachers, school leaders, and district leaders in the Champaign Community Unit School District 4 (Illinois) who are implementing Amplify CKLA as their core instruction. The ultimate goal of this role is to support high-quality literacy instruction in classrooms and the successful implementation of Amplify CKLA in this district by delivering rich and rigorous coaching and professional learning experiences that result in significant student learning.
The Literacy Coach will deliver coaching in schools and at the district level for four days/week to support the implementation of CKLA. An additional day each week will be set aside for internal Amplify collaboration and support. The Coach will gather data to report back to the district, and work directly with the PD Strategist and Customer Success Manager to ensure there is proper communication, systems, and routines in place that lead to success with the Amplify CKLA curriculum at Champaign Schools.
This is a position that will follow the district calendar starting July 1, 2023. Most weeks will be 40 hour work weeks, including both district- and Amplify-facing days. The Literacy Coach will also collaborate with a cohort of embedded Amplify coaches supporting districts across the region.
In this role, you will:
- Develop and maintain expertise on key concepts for the Amplify CKLA program and its related professional development offerings
- Participate in paid training to become a certified Professional Learning Specialist (if not already certified)
- Collaborate with district leadership and the Amplify PD Strategist to determine strategy and focus for coaching approach at different times of year and adjust course, as needed, based on what is leading to improved student outcomes. At times, adjusting course on short notice may be necessary.
- The Literacy Coach's responsibilities will be based on the district's goals and priorities. Specific areas of focus may include:
- Individual teacher support
- Leading classroom observations and providing feedback to teachers and leaders
- Conducting model lessons and co-teaching alongside classroom teachers
- Providing recommendations to educators designed to enhance equity of learning for diverse student populations including Students with Learning & Thinking Differences and English Learners
- Group Learning Experiences
- Facilitating professional development sessions (in person and remote), as needed, for leaders and teachers on prioritized topics which align to successes and needs in classrooms
- Supporting unit/lesson planning with grade-level teams and/or individual teachers
- Leading lesson study cycles for teachers
- Analyzing student work and formative assessment data to support instructional decision-making and responsiveness to learner outcomes
- Creating or customizing professional development experiences, as needed
- School Leadership Support
- Providing office hours for leaders and teachers
- Cultivating model classrooms (and capturing video examples from these classrooms) as a means of elevating and replicating best practices for planning and instruction
- Maintain and communicate key information to relevant stakeholders about individual educators' or the schools' needs, goals, and challenges
- Supporting the Amplify Embedded Coaching team also working in the district with weekly check-in calls, book study, data gathering, and overall coaching support
Required education and experience:
- Passionate about literacy and deep knowledge of the science of reading and aligned, high quality instructional materials
- 5+ years of K-5 classroom literacy teaching experience, leading to demonstrable results for students
- Experience leading sustained coaching engagements and/or professional development for educators in K-5
- Experience working on collaborative projects with leaders and teachers
- Proven efficacy in time management while managing multiple engagements and competing priorities
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated proficiency in the use of productivity tools in Google Workspace (Sheets, Docs, Slides)
- Able to travel locally (between 80-100% of the week) across Champaign, IL, area to support district educators
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required as this role requires in-person and on-site activities
Preferred education and experience:
- Experience teaching or supporting Amplify Literacy programs
- Experience analyzing data and using it to inform practice
- Ability to support teachers in a remote learning environment, if needed
- Able to navigate instruction with different Learning Management Systems (Schoology, Clever, Google Classroom, etc.)
- Master's or Advanced Degree in Education
Additional information:
Location: This position requires that the Literacy Coach is permitted to work in the US, have residency in the US and possess a valid US driver's license. The specialist should live within 30 miles of the Champaign, IL, school district. The Coach may be asked to deliver sessions throughout the country based on business needs and during school closures or if the contract terminates early.
Travel: Local travel is required and considered an essential function of the job. Car mileage and related expenses for professional development delivery are initially paid in advance by the Literacy Coach. Reimbursements for these expenses - including mileage if driving your own car - will be processed 2-3 weeks following submission of the expense reimbursement requests.
Documentation: If selected, a background check and proof of COVID-19 vaccination will be required. The latter is subject to potential reasonable accommodation due to medical issues or sincerely held religious beliefs.
Equipment: This position requires reliable home internet that can support video calls on Google Meet and Zoom and a quiet, professional place to deliver remote professional development.
Compensation and Benefits:
The gross salary for this role is $1,735/week for approximately 50 weeks of work. Benefits are available through Target CW Staffing Agency. The contract terms will be for a one-year assignment. Time off will be taken in coordination with the district calendar, as much as is possible.
