The Litigation Coordinator I’s primarily responsible is to assist the Director of Legal Services in the recruitment and maintenance of its national legal panel.  This position will serve as the liaison between MEMIC and our legal panel as it relates to any issues that may arise, such as billing or customer service.  The position will be responsible for logging and tracking all litigation referrals to in-house defensive attorneys and law firm panel through our litigation database and electronic billing software.  This person will also track mediation and litigation results in Maine as well as litigation results outside of Maine.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assigns litigation referrals from adjusters to in-house defense attorneys or to outside panel counsel.
  • Enters and tracks all litigation referrals in our litigation database and electronic legal billing systems.
  • Receives and processes mediation notices on behalf of the adjuster for Maine claims. Tracks chargeback figures and mediation results.
  • Receives and processes petitions for Maine claims and sends out appropriate notices to Compliance and Claim Staff.
  • Receives and processes administrative decisions from the Maine Workers’ Compensation Board. Tracks Maine chargeback figures and litigation results.
  • Coordinates the retrieval of subpoenaed records and payment of those records with MEMIC’s subpoena service vendor(s).
  • Generates monthly, quarterly and annual litigation referral/expense reports as requested by the Director of Legal Services.
  • Assists in resolving any billing issues with our outside legal partners and in monitoring the performance of them.
  • Assists in the recruitment of new law firms for legal panel.
  • Provides back up to legal support staff and in-house defense counsel, as necessary.
  • Reviews individual legal bills for discrepancies or trends.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Associates Degree with one or two year’ experience working in a legal environment or an equivalent combination of education and work experience preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to type with speed and accuracy required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint a plus.
  • Must have excellent grammatical as well as written and verbal communication skills
