Job Description

Local Investigative editor wanted to lead local news team.

Do you have what it takes to dig beyond breaking news coverage in a state with limited central control, little trust in government, massive inequality and some of the craziest local news stories in the nation? AL.com is seeking a top-flight news leader to guide its coverage of the state's three largest metros.

We devote extraordinary resources to investigative reporting and are looking to grow our in-depth coverage of the state's largest cities. This Managing Producer will supervise coverage of the biggest, most impactful stories in historic Birmingham, fast-growing Huntsville and coastal Mobile.

We seek someone with an ability to guide reporters through challenging stories that change laws, impact lives, examine inequities, hold local leaders accountable and compete for national awards. Since 2018, AL.com journalists have won two Pulitzer Prize awards and earned a finalist spot for a Pulitzer, as well as earning honors from IRE, Goldsmith and ONA.

We are a digitally focused company, the largest media outlet in Alabama, now creating content across a host of platforms and products, including our local digital daily news product The Lede. We are seeking an editor to tell stories online on our main statewide news site, AL.com, a site with a loyal and large following that extends well beyond Alabama, as well as in The Lede, a growing daily product with subscribers in each metro.

This leader is responsible for development of authoritative, accountability reporting in the state's largest cities that builds and engages diverse audiences. Duties include strategic planning, project execution and supervision of reporters, managing performance-based metrics for the content team and individual employees.

To be a good fit for this opportunity, you will need to have:

  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple complex projects to on-time delivery
  • Solid track record of successfully developing news projects
  • Ability to work collaboratively and on deadline
  • Experience editing and writing
  • Comfort with analyzing data and procuring public records
  • Experience working with video and social media is highly desirable
  • Ability to create and implement strategies to respond to the evolving nature of the industry by experimenting with new models, platforms and ideas to stimulate audience engagement and revenue generation/growth.

We are committed to telling stories from perspectives that have been historically ignored by mainstream media outlets.
