As the Mainframe Systems Programmer, you will produce or modify computer programs of all sizes and complexity using COBOL programming language. You will solve system and program problems. You will also recommend courses of action on new application jobs, while considering the total system spectrum, from source document origination to final systems output and handling. Additionally, you will:
- Handle extensive research, analysis, definition, and documentation on all facets of the job
- Recommend the appropriate hardware solution (personal computer, LAN, mainframe, client server) for the application
- Provide mentoring support for less experienced programming staff
- Work with minimal supervision and be responsible for making an established range of decisions, escalating to a manager when necessary and updating a manager on a regular basis
- Research, design, define, develop, test, document, and implement new computer applications or changes to existing applications following company standards
- Install software packages and personal computer software with the primary technology being Mainframe COBOL
- Assure that hardware and software operate efficiently
- Utilize programming tools effectively to ensure accuracy and enhance productivity
- Assemble and analyze data relating to processing problems, soliciting help as needed from IT and business unit associates
- Consult and advise business unit associates by written and verbal communication on inquiries concerning existing or proposed systems
- Participate in committee meetings on developmental projects, large-scale improvement projects, and internal IT technical committees
- Chair committees or subcommittees
- Provide training and mentoring to other programming staff, systems managers, business unit management, or business unit associates on technical topics or systems definition
- Handle multiple assignments with multiple deadlines simultaneously
- Perform other duties as assigned by management
What You'll Need to be Successful:
- Bachelor's degree
- Proficient in specific programming languages required by the individual business units
- Proficient in word processing and spreadsheet applications
- Proven significant Mainframe COBOL programming experience (research, design, gathering requirements, working with business units, developing programs, testing, documentation, production support)
- Proven experience in advising programming associates on both technical (writing programs, testing standards) and application (business knowledge, system definition) facets of the job
- Proven strong analytical skills, including demonstrated experience identifying, defining, and quantifying problems; collecting or interpreting data, establishing facts, and providing effective solutions
- Proven experience of good decision-making skills when dealing with multiple alternatives
- Demonstrated ability to document procedures and activities in a manner that is understandable to others and prepared using a prescribed format, verbal and written, of the elements of grammar, punctuation, diction, and spelling proficiency
- Demonstrated experience working effectively within a team
- Ability to provide examples of motivating co-workers in difficult situations
- Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills; occasionally conveys information to internal and external customers in a clear, accurate, focused, and concise manner.
- Proven experience working under multiple deadlines with minimal supervision
- Able to continually perform an activity such as transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, and extensive reading
- Visual acuity to determine accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned
