JOB FUNCTION / SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for ordering and reviewing external commercial appraisals for the purpose of maintaining quality control, particularly related to technical accuracy and the reasonableness of value conclusions for commercial property valuations for moderate to high-risk transactions. This position provides supervision, training, and mentoring of commercial staff, including CVA’s. Assists the Chief Appraiser in developing and managing the commercial appraisal services unit for Hancock Whitney and supports the company’s loan growth goals while maintaining asset quality.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for supervision and mentoring of commercial staff with regard to policy and procedures.
- Assists the Chief Appraiser by providing input and implementation support on policy changes and requirements.
- Performs complex tasks in handling escalated QC inquires and Appraisal Resolution Requests.
- Directs the appraisal bid and review processes, including engaging and consulting with contract reviewers.
- Ensures compliance with Hancock Whitney Appraisal Department policies, and with federal and state regulations, including FIRREA and USPAP.
- Researches, studies and analyzes market trends as well as property valuation data.
- Provides insight and technical interpretations of real estate market conditions and trends to management.
- Provides feedback to fee appraisers with respect to service level expectations in valuation assignments in terms of product quality, efficiency, and customer service.
- Ensures quality, timely, and cost-effective valuation products.
- Reads and analyzes appraisal reports and data daily to determine reasonableness and accuracy.
- Stays current with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice.
- Provides internal consulting for Hancock Whitney associates.
- Provides vendor appraiser consulting/mentoring.
- Reviews and analyzes appraiser applications for addition to the approved appraiser list.
- Selects appraisers in areas outside our service area for commercial bids
- Participates in the training and development of junior staff and in loan officer orientations.
- Occasionally travels for property site inspections for internal purposes.
- Performs all other duties and special projects as assigned.
- Performs backup duties for other positions in the group as deemed necessary.
- Incumbent is required to comply with all applicable federal, state, and local banking and industry related laws and regulations including but not limited to the Bank Secrecy Act.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manage subordinates in the senior commercial review area and is responsible for overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the unit. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws; Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing assignments; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; address complaints and resolving problems. This position assists the Chief Appraiser in strategic development and management of the commercial appraisal services unit for Hancock Whitney.
MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE:
- Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Business, or a related field OR an equivalent combination of education and experience that is sufficient to obtain a state-certified general real estate appraisal license
- 10 years of appraisal or real estate-related work experience
- State Certified General Appraisal License and/or MAI Designation with the Appraisal Institute required
- Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and customers
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Microsoft word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Experience using RIMS or other Appraisal workflow system, preferred

- Ability to work under stress and meet deadlines
- Ability to operate related equipment to perform the essential job functions
- Ability to read and interpret a document if required to perform the essential job functions
- Ability to travel if required to perform the essential job functions
- Ability to lift/move/carry approximately 10 pounds if required to perform the essential job functions. If the employee is unable to lift/move/carry this weight and can be accommodated without causing the department/division an “undue hardship” then the employee must be accommodated; hence omitting lifting/moving/carrying as a physical requirement.
