Our small and mighty communications team is looking for a hands-on, results-driven, media-savvy Communications Manager to spearhead our Westcoast communications capability. You'll join a team that punches well above its weight and has generated prominent media coverage most other companies only dream about - including signature stories in USA Today, WSJ, Washington Post, Fast Company, Forbes and TIME; as well as prominent coverage on NBC, CBS, ABC, CNBC, FOX Business and NPR.

Priorities:

  • Lead media engagement with local broadcast, online and print outlets across Avelo's growing network of more than a dozen destinations spanning eight West Coast states.
  • Drive broadscale media attention around new route announcements, inaugural flights, marketing promotions, market anniversaries and other business milestones.
  • Create sustaining PR campaigns to maintain local market visibility between major announcements.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Communications and East Coast Communications Manager to identify, pitch and manage national consumer, business and trade media opportunities.
  • Effectively manage operational and customer experience issues - ensuring fair and factual coverage.
  • Serve as a spokesperson with local and national media.
  • Develop positive and trusting relationships with local business, community and political leaders.
  • Serve as the primary Crewmember (employee) communications liaison at Avelo's Burbank base. This responsibility includes supporting Crewmember events and coordinating with other internal communications teammates in curating Crewmember stories and content.

Requirements

Experience:

  • At least five years of in-house or agency PR experience - some journalism experience a plus.
  • Strong background in consumer-focused PR - airline, travel and tourism sectors a plus.
  • Exceptional writing experience is essential - including press releases, media statements, pitch letters, speeches / outlines, and internal leader messages / video scripts.
  • A tested issues/crisis manager with proven experience mitigating high-visibility issues / crises.
  • Experience advising, coaching and interacting with senior leaders.
  • Extensive experience serving as a company / organization spokesperson (including on-camera interviews and public speaking engagements).
  • Familiarity with PR measurement, monitoring and newswire platforms.
  • Established media relationships in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and other Westcoast Avelo markets. Established media relationships with national consumer and business media a plus.

Specialized Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism or related field required.
  • Spanish fluency is advantageous.
  • Must be willing and able to travel up to 50%.
