Position Summary

The Continuous Improvement Manager is responsible for leading process improvements through the implementation of the STERIS Business System (SBS) in support of business transformation and sustainment throughout assigned facilities. The CI manager will deliver practical, hands-on training in SBS methodology and tools to eliminate waste in manufacturing and functional support areas. Will work with/through the Director of Operations/ site leaders/GMs to implement and monitor the effectiveness of Continuous Improvement (both physical and cultural) in all aspects of assigned facilities.

Duties

  • Leads and drives business transformation and change initiatives to create and sustain world-class, visually managed manufacturing operations site(s) for instantaneous recognition of waste in all areas.
  • Implements STERIS Business System and continuous improvement activities in all major disciplines and in alignment with strategic initiatives, goals, and objectives.
  • Facilitates and/or conducts continuous improvement training programs, Kaizen events, and other improvement initiatives. Assesses, coaches, and provides constructive feedback to teams to strengthen improvement competencies at the site.
  • Serves as a change facilitator, develops, and collaborates with site champions, and influences site leadership in the transformation to and/or in support of a continuous improvement culture.
  • Develops and manages multiple processes, long and short-term, sustainable, lean and continuous improvement related visual action plans as well as assigned key projects.
  • Monitors existing and new manufacturing processes for improvement opportunities in safety, quality, delivery, and cost through problem-solving methodology.
  • Tracks, measures, and reports progress on improvements using visual, standard, established Key Performance Indicators.
  • Assists in the preparation of budgets, schedules, capital appropriation requests, and other financial reports particularly regarding the impact of and sustaining improvements and waste reduction as indicated by lean accounting principles.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge through benchmarking world class manufacturing and business operations and personal technical training.
  • Organize and facilitate site Lean/Continuous Improvement Steering Committees.
  • Establish and monitor visual management including Andon systems, SQDC systems and tools, 5S systems and tools, Leader Standard Work behaviors, and Hour x Hour boards for compliance to standards and effective utilization.
  • Initiate, maintain, and share site developed "best practices".

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, manufacturing, or related technical discipline required.
  • Lean/Continuous Improvement manufacturing (related) training required, preferably from Shingijutsu or internationally recognized certification body (SME/AME/ASQ/Shingo).
  • 8+ years of demonstrated qualified lean manufacturing/continuous improvement experience in a leadership role required.
  • Thorough knowledge and demonstrated understanding of Toyota Production System and methodologies such as: Process Flow Mapping, Value Stream Mapping, 5S/Visual Management, TPM, QCO-SMED/Changeover, Standard Work, A3 Development and Management, Problem Solving and Root Cause/Corrective Action Analysis (PDCA), Quality at the Source, Just In Time, Kaizen/Continuous Improvement, Abnormality Management, Strategy Alignment/Policy Deployment, Project Management, Cellular and Model Line Development.
  • Extensive Gemba based continuous improvement tools/techniques, and coaching.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to integrate safety, ergonomics and 5S requirements within improvement practices.
  • Proficiency with personal computer applications, required (Excel, Word, Visio, MS Project and Power Point).
  • Superior and demonstrated leadership, team building, communication, presentation, interpersonal, and coaching skills and the ability to ensure accountability.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and independently in a fast paced and changing environment with multiple priorities to achieve results.
  • Ability to interpret manufacturing schematics and blueprints and interface effectively in technical situations.
  • Ability to mentor and facilitate culture development in an environment with varying degrees of acceptance.
  • Incumbent must exercise independent and group problem solving skills to meet the objectives as assigned along with opportunities captured by improvement events and activities.

Preferred Experience

  • Toyota Motor Manufacturing or similar Lean experts. Lean Certification or training desirable.
  • SKB/BPK/MDI/NPD/Six Sigma training and/or experience, desirable.
  • Experience working with Shingijutsu or similar globally recognized Lean consulting firms.
  • At least one successful lean transformation experience desired, preferably at a "brown field" site.
