As the Engineering Manager of our Platform Technologies team, you will lead a team of eight to ten engineers delivering world class product capabilities and ensuring security, performance, and reliability of WP Engine's hosting platform that serves roughly six billion hits per day. Responsible for the full vertical slice, your team provides WP Engine customers with self-serviceable solutions through custom applications and partnerships with industry leading infrastructure technology providers. We will rely on you to be an active voice and advocate for our mission and strategic objectives, while championing the needs of your team. Working at the intersection of people and technology, you will play a huge role in mentorship and career development while also helping the team make strong technical decisions.
In this role, you'll be responsible for shipping products of high quality, recruiting exceptional engineers, and leading engineering teams applying an SRE mentality to design, build, maintain, and operate distributed systems at scale. You'll work closely with peers in product and program management to define and shape the overall product roadmap and ultimately deliver a positive impact to our customers and teams. In the leadership capacity you will be responsible for leading a team of smart-working engineers that are passionate about building and automating tools on our platform and on applications to make it more reliable, scalable, secure, and usable.

The Day to Day:
- Be a servant-leader empowering engineering teams and help remove impediments that reduce their ability to be effective.
- Encourage and drive the implementation of engineering standards. Identify issues that teams might overlook, such as scalability, performance, security, etc. Develop their ability to independently identify and avoid issues.
- Spend time gaining hands-on familiarity with the tools and technologies that teams are using and help identify new ones that could be useful.
- Lead the recruitment and hiring of outstanding engineers who reinforce our core values and add to the culture.
- Maintain high talent expectations and guide the career development of team members, including both technical and non-technical proficiencies vital for being successful and impactful in a professional software engineering organization.
- Stay up to date on activities across our company, our competitors, and our largest customers, and ensure teams are informed about relevant developments.
- Partner with Product Management and others across the organization on the product vision and strategy, and give feedback on the content and prioritization of the product backlog.
- Be accountable for the team's health, engagement, performance, and value-delivery outcomes.
Your Expertise and Passion
- 2+ years of experience leading productive, high-functioning software engineering teams in building and operating applications in public cloud environments, especially multi-cloud, and especially with Kubernetes (e.g. GKS/EKS/AKS)
- 4+ years strong hands on experience in Kubernetes container management platform
- 6+ years experience as a software engineer in a distributed computing environment.
- Experience leading teams in building and operating high quality applications built for high performance and high availability at substantial scale.
- Experience with backend service development and API design; Some familiarity with Golang, PHP or Python
- Experience with Agile practices, especially Scrum, to encourage teams to learn, self-organize, and reflect on their wins and losses to continuously improve.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate between Engineering, Product and other business units
- Ability to balance results-driven and relationship-focused management styles through communication, compassion, and emotional intelligence
- Lifelong learner, particularly as it relates to building a remarkable and enviable engineering team and processes
- Natural problem solving abilities, an inquisitive personality, and an eagerness to pursue the challenge of big problems
