Manager, Investment Accounting – Mortgage

Job Summary

The responsibilities of the Manager, Mortgage Investment Accounting will include oversight of the mortgage transaction processing, accounting and analysis, and SOX controls of the commercial and residential mortgage loans held by the insurance company.  The candidate must possess strong Statutory and GAAP accounting and reporting knowledge for mortgage loans to support timely and accurate accounting. The ideal candidate will be detail oriented, enjoy collaborating with others, have the ability to challenge current processes and drive efficiencies. 

This position reports to the Director, Investment Accounting and will interact with all levels of Senior Management.  This position will lead a small team of mortgage investment accounting professionals and work closely with an external third-party investment accounting administrator, external investment managers and internal stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Oversee accounting and analysis for all of the mortgage loans held by the Company.
• Lead the monthly processing and month-end close process by working with a third-party accounting administrator, asset manager and servicers to ensure remittances are processed on a timely and accurate basis.
• Review and approve journal entries as needed for month end close. Assisting in resolving general ledger reconciliation variances on the mortgage loan portfolio.
• Responsible for overseeing the mortgage loan data flow between asset manager and third-party accounting administrator for mortgage loan reporting.
• Provide analysis of results for variance in trends and against expected results

• Manage the CECL allowance calculations and ensure impairment and allowance transactions are recorded timely and accurately.  Lead the quarterly meeting on reviewing and approving mortgage CECL scenarios.

• SOX Control Owner for the mortgage loans. Responsible for ensuring the processes are properly documented as to policies, procedures and controls. Support auditors and internal controls team during their test work
• Oversee any external and internal audit requests for mortgage loans
• Provide regular updates to investment accounting senior management keeping them well-informed of any issues, shortcomings, or accomplishments of the team
• Actively seeks and proposes methods for continuing process improvements in the reporting, analysis and system functions

Experience and Education Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
• 7+ years of accounting experience with 3 years of mortgage accounting experience
• Experience with third-party servicers and reports
• 1-2 years of experience in a leadership role preferred
• A solid understanding of the accounting requirements for residential and commercial loan products in accordance with statutory and GAAP accounting principles.
• CPA, CFA or MBA preferred
• Industry experience in life insurance or financial services industries preferred
