Position Purpose

The Learning Experience & Operations team, part of Sleep Number's broader Learning & Leadership Development team, is charged with creating impactful learning experiences for a variety of team members and leaders across the enterprise.

The Learning Experience Design Manager will be a coach and a player by directly leading Learning Experience Designers and designing, developing, and curating effective solutions for learning and development programs.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Leads learning and development creative processes including intake, demand planning, resource allocation, and portfolio management for direct report Learning Experience Designers (Instructional Designers).
  • Builds meaningful relationships with leaders, stakeholders, and subject matter experts. Consults with them and L&D team to determine if training is an appropriate intervention for the opportunity. Ensures project requirements and collaboration within team to obtain necessary information required to create learning objectives and training components.
  • Develops, manages, and owns program-level plans to ensure that instructional design, development, and implementation of learning and development programs meet objectives and are completed on time, on budget, and with high quality.
  • Periodically called on to design and develop solutions for the most important flagship events (e.g., national conferences) and large-scale company programs based on learning objectives, instructional design methodologies and in a style that exemplifies Sleep Number's brand personality and standards.

  • Closely collaborates with others within Learning Experience & Operations team and broader Learning & Leadership Development team to ensure content is accurate, efficient, effective, and sustainable and functions properly within learning management system (LMS) or other platforms.
  • Uses technical and creative expertise to mentor/coach team members to design and develop using standards, processes, and best practices in an innovative and collaborative environment.
  • Continuously evaluates effectiveness of learning and development programs and processes and identifies recommendations for improvements.

Position Requirements

Experience, Education & Certifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (Master's degree preferred) in a related field (e.g., instructional design, performance consulting, education, human resources).
  • 5-7+ years experience in instructional design, preferably within retail, customer service or other customer-facing industries.
  • Direct report people management experience in a fast-paced corporate setting.

  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in e-Learning authoring software (e.g., Articulate Rise).
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with multimedia development in rich media tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud, Camtasia, Microsoft Office 365 suite).
  • Knowledge of/experience with learning and development processes and platforms such as learning management systems (LMS). Workday experience a plus.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Exhibits advanced proficiency in instructional design processes, including adult learning principles, learning technologies, and instructional design methodologies (e.g., ADDIE).
  • Proven track record of designing, developing, curating, and managing learning solutions including e-Learning courses, instructor-led materials, training videos, and job aids.
  • Excellent creative and analytical skills and the ability to convert information and needs into practical training deliverables that are both instructionally sound and visually appealing.
  • Strong desire and willingness to provide both consultative/advisory support and hands-on execution.
  • Analytical and collaborative skills on when it's best to build vs. buy or curate learning solutions based on resource capacity, subject-matter expertise, time sensitivity, and cost.

  • Proficiency in developing and curating soft skills, leadership, sales, customer service, and/or systems training.
  • Self-starter who possesses exceptional people, project, and time management skills with great attention to detail.
  • Works well independently, as a leader, and as a member of a team.
  • Global thinker who performs well in high-pressure situations in a fast-paced, sometimes ambiguous environment.
  • Communicates and collaborates cross-functionally and across multiple levels of the organization, and influences partners to achieve results.

  • Thinks beyond boundaries of immediate role to keep internal customers, department, and company in mind; acts strategically based on long-term implications of decisions, understands different parts of the organization and their interdependencies and uses that knowledge to influence and make decisions.

  • Skills to measure effectiveness of training and return on investment.

Working Conditions:

  • Flexibility to be based near corporate headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota and/or to work virtually anywhere in the United States.
  • Must be able to sit or stand at a desk, in front of a computer for up to 8 hours per day.
