Manager, Museum Experience
Job Description
Summary:
The SPLC is a catalyst for racial justice in the South and beyond, working in partnership with communities to dismantle white supremacy, strengthen intersectional movements, and advance the human rights of all people.
Under the supervision of the Director of the Alabama State Office, the Civil Rights Memorial Center (CRMC) Manager, Museum Experience will play an integral role in supporting all aspects of the CRMC’s day-to-day operations. They will oversee CRMC staff, administration of operations, site maintenance, visitor services, educational programming, working with external vendors and scheduling and conducting CRMC tours.
Primary Job Functions:
- Direct the day-to-day operations of the CRMC, including visitor services, programming, tours, and security;
- Provide excellent, knowledgeable customer service to visitors, donors and guests;
- Provide tours, train others to give tour and supervise all CRMC tours;
- Provide high-level oversight of visitor engagement and experience;
- Assist the Program Manager with developing and creating innovative community programs, projects and partnerships statewide to raise public awareness of the CRMC and its programs;
- Build relationships with educators and administrators to create opportunities to increase statewide school group visitation;
- Form statewide relationships with tour operators, community groups and educational programs;
- Communicate mission to internal and external stakeholders as well as visitors and donors;
- Perform administrative duties related to the operation of the CRMC;
- Oversee projects with external vendors;
- Identify priorities and resources in annual and long-range planning for the museum;
- Prepare regular monthly reports for Director of the Alabama State Office;
- Manage a team of approximately four staff, providing mentoring and coaching to support the work;
- Hire, train, establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign duties, and conduct performance reviews; and
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications –
Education and Related Work Experience:
- At least five (5) years’ experience developing rich and educational experiences within a museum, cultural resource center, historic site, visitor center, educational institution (K-12, higher education or community education) or related hospitality experience;
- Minimum of three (3) year’s of experience managing full-time direct reports;
- Demonstrated experience working with multiple stakeholders, community leaders, schools, community groups and museum personnel and working in community engagement, event planning and community relationship building;
- Demonstrated commitment to providing inclusive and accessible experiences for diverse audiences; and
- High school diploma or GED.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the Civil Rights Movement, contemporary social justice issues and current issues in the field of museum education;
- The ability to plan and present programs to to diverse audiences;
- Strong interpersonal skills, excellent customer service orientation and experience;
- Strong presentation skills; must be able to make presentations to large groups;
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal;
- Ability to research past and current resources on civil and human rights issues as it relates to museum education and outreach efforts;
- Able to work effectively, independently, and collaboratively;
- Excellent computer skills; must be proficient in Microsoft Office suite, Adobe, excel spreadsheet, and other applications;
- Must be highly organized and possess the ability to prioritize work and manage multiple projects and deadlines;
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends and occasionally holidays;
- Commitment to ideals of justice, diversity, equity and inclusion; and
- Commitment to fostering an anti-racist work culture and to anti-racist principles and learning.
Compensation:
This is an exempt role and the minimum starting salary is $92,033 annually. Salary is commensurate with experience.
Work Designation:
This role has the following work designation options:
- In-Office: Will work 100% of the time at the Montgomery, AL office location.
Other Special Considerations:
This job is performed under general office conditions, and is not subject to any strenuous physical demands or dangerous conditions. Must be willing to work flexible hours, including weekends, evenings and occasionally holidays.
