Position Summary

The Data Engineering Manager leads the Avantax Data Engineering Team for integration development activities needed in order to leverage data to meet Avantax's long term goals.

A servant leader to the team, the manager will inspire and enable their direct reports to perform at their best. As part of the Avantax leadership team this role requires communication skills that allow for clear, concise, and respectful promotion of goals, ideas, and direction. The manager will work at both the strategic level with organizational design and resource planning, and at the tactical level with hands-on guidance on articulating the vision.

The manager's mission is to ensure a delivery of high-quality data products to stakeholders supporting both operational (OLTP) and analytical (Data Warehouse) data needs. This will include team building and recruiting efforts, team member development, mentoring, and goal setting, as well as regular measuring and communicating of team achievements, project status and maintenance of standard development KPI's and metrics.

This position requires drawing upon substantial data engineering experience in both tactical and strategic efforts as well as administrative and people management experience. Proficiency with building and managing ETL/ELT data pipelines and their environments across a diverse on-prem and cloud hosted data ecosystem containing distributed file systems, a variety of SQL and NoSQL data stores, MPP Datawarehouse architecture, and leveraging a variety of data/API integration tooling and techniques.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of data engineers, setting priorities and ensuring all team members are aligned with company goals and objectives.
  • Collaborate with the product owner and data stakeholders to understand the business data requirements and implement optimal data solutions to ensure the team's output meets their needs.
  • Warrant that the team's development efforts follow best practices for data quality, security, and governance.
  • Ensure that our practices coalesce around concurrent goals of high performance, operational excellence, accuracy, reliability, predictability, resiliency, and scalability.
  • Establish processes and practices that enable team members to meet goals associated with the creation data documentation and metadata, data lineage and dictionary and validate that the information stays current throughout.
  • Mentor team to correctly establish a data-driven culture, promoting the adoption of monitoring tools.
  • Develop realistic timelines, evaluate, and communicate risks and progress to the agile team and data leadership.

Education & Experience

  • Managing high performance ELT/ ETL (Data Integration) development teams
  • Building and managing agile dev practices by ensuring processes are created and followed across team members.
  • Creating and implementing on-prem and cloud development best practices and standards
  • Managing workload, project velocity, capacity across agile workstreams
  • Collaboration across teams with project management, application development, data architecture as well as other technical and non-technical teams to ensure consistent and predictable and successful data delivery.
  • Enabling and ensuring team members have the necessary skillsets, tooling/ technology, and processes in place to deliver top quality data driven features and solutions.
  • Experience in data development for OLTP (application database development) as well as for OLAP (Star Schema - Data Warehouse)
  • Experience creating and managing support and monitoring roles, SLAs, and processes to ensure 24x7 uptime.
  • Experience creating and leveraging development metrics and KPI's to create transparency and aid in strategic and tactical planning.
  • Experience leading data integration efforts and team members in migration of people, processes, and technology from on-prem to cloud hosted ecosystems.
  • At least 10 years in progressive growth in Data Integration/ ETL Development roles
  • At least 7 years in management role, leading delivery via people and process management
  • At least 5 years in senior level technical data development roles leveraging various technologies to perform ETL/ ELT data integration (AWS Glue, Boomi, Python, and DBT preferred)
  • At least 5 years development and management experience leveraging cloud databases and data integration/ data storage systems (AWS Aurora, S3, Dynamo DB, and Snowflake preferred)
  • At least 2 years development experience leveraging SQL Server/ SSIS based database technologies.
  • At least 2 years development experience leveraging distributed systems (HDFS/ EMR, Data Lake, Big Data Systems)
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of data governance, security, and privacy best practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to think strategically and plan long-term initiatives that align with the company's goals and objectives.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to take ownership of complex technical issues.
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and automation techniques
  • Experience ensuring data quality across multiple datasets used for analytical purposes.
  • Knowledge of data transformation preferably using DBT
  • Knowledge in concepts and/ or utilization of streaming data technology and data integration techniques
  • Experience in agile development methodologies.
