Job Description
About the Role:
As a Manager, you will report into the Director of Practical Law Litigation and will be responsible for providing substantial people management and operational support to your Director to:
- Deliver Practical Law Litigation content and related products.
- Directly manage, coach, and support some of Practical Law Litigation's Legal Editors, Senior Associate Editors, Associate Editors, and interns and assume management responsibilities for them in Workday.
- Identify and provide support initiatives to improve efficiencies and processes to improve the team's workflow while maintaining a consistent subscriber experience and achieving business objectives.
- Support customer engagement as needed.
You may be asked to act as the Director's representative as needed from time to time and to take on some of the Director's day-to-day responsibilities when the Director is absent from work.
In this opportunity as Manager, Practical Law, you will be:
- Coordinating work with the Director and Senior Managing Editors, particularly with respect to content needs, workloads, and expectations for your direct reports.
- Assisting with developing a plan for annual deliverables that is consistent with Practical Law's strategic priorities, including maintenance, support of key initiatives, and new content.
- Ensuring that you and your team develop and maintain an excellent understanding of the legal market, our customers and their emerging needs, and competitors, and:
- interact effectively with customers, consultation boards, and contributors as needed; and
- work with all parts of the business to deliver and gain insight into business strategies, other products, sales, marketing, and technology development.
- Supporting the Director in the delivery of business messages to your team consistently and clearly, and ensuring that each member of the team understands the message.
- Regularly meet with your direct reports and team and provide performance management, motivation, coaching and development, developing a flexible, resilient workforce, managing talent development, providing for succession planning, and encouraging high levels of employee engagement.

- As needed and requested by the Director, providing leadership on specific projects relating to the delivery of Practical Law or related TR products or to meet other Editorial, Product, business, or people goals and objectives.
- Both within your team and the broader Litigation team and across Practical Law, promoting collaboration, best practices, the efficient use of budgets, and effective deployment of people to achieve business objectives.
- As needed, representing the business and the product in meetings with customers and with internal and external stakeholders.
- Writing, creating, and editing expert content and resources based on your practice experience and understanding of customer needs.
You are a fit for the role of Manager, Practical Law, if your background includes:
- A deep understanding of litigation legal practice.
- An excellent grasp of the Practical Law Style Guide.
- Substantial Practical Law experience (preferred).
- A customer focus with a good understanding of how legal know-how is used by customers and the potential impact of decisions on customers' use and perception of products.
- Good managerial skills with proven ability to coordinate the efforts of a team and to work under pressure to meet goals and deadlines.
- Excellent people and communication skills.
- Comfort working with ambiguity and in a matrixed environment.
- A proven ability to build strong relationships and collaborate with diverse teams of people who bring different perspectives and lived experiences to the business.
- A proven ability to think strategically and innovatively and to help manage the resolution of complex or unusual problems.
- A passion for writing and outstanding editing skills, including:
- very close attention to detail;
- impressive command of grammar, punctuation, and plain English; and
- the ability to write about complex legal issues clearly and simply.
- Excellent knowledge of online research databases.
Desirable Skills and Experience:
- Experience coaching, mentoring, recruiting, developing talent, and managing projects.
- Experience working with complex teams, including managing multiple conflicting priorities with limited resources and through change.
- Substantial experience working in a Legal/Publishing environment, using technology to create and disseminate online content, legal writing, or legal publishing.
- Commercial business acumen, including an understanding of the wider Thomson Reuters Legal business and the general business environment in which Thomson Reuters operates.
- Awareness of how business unit costs impact product costs and ultimately the company's financial results.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
Education/Certification Required:
US JD degree and bar admission in good standing

Thomson Reuters complies with local laws that require upfront disclosure of the expected pay range for a position. The location(s) for this role include one or more of the following (New York City, San Francisco, Culver City, Irvine). The base compensation range for the role in any of those locations is $96,300 - $178,800. The location(s) for this role include one or more of the following states (CA, CO, CT, NV, WA) and/or remote. The base compensation range for the role in any of those locations is $87,500 - $162,500. This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on a combination of enterprise and individual performance. Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual's knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity. Base pay is one part of a comprehensive Total Reward program which also includes flexible and supportive benefits and other wellbeing programs.
