Job Description

The Profitability team within the Financial Planning & Analysis department is responsible for the development and maintenance of decision support systems that measure the cost and profitability of Norfolk Southern business at a granular level (shipment / line segment), using an activity-based costing methodology. It establishes the overall corporate costing philosophy, theory, and formulas, and uses a system to assign costs according to this philosophy. The Profitability team works with various departments across Norfolk Southern, e.g.:

  • Commercial teams: Evaluate the profitability of existing and prospective business
  • Network Planning and Optimization (NPO): Financially measure operational plan changes and evaluate financial tradeoffs between plans
  • Strategic Planning, Labor Relations, Human Resources, and other departments: Provide cost and profitability information to support strategic decision-making

The Manager Profit Analysis role is responsible for conducting analyses using NS' activity-based costing system to drive insights and support decision-making. You will be an expert on the system's data, methodologies, and outputs. You will build financial analyses to assess cost-benefit tradeoffs and contribute to the continuous improvement of NS' approach to making financial decisions.

Principal Duties:

  • Leverage the activity-based costing system to assess the profitability of specific sub-sets of NS' business
  • Build Excel models to analyze the cost-benefit trade-offs of various decisions
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of profitability analysis / costing methodology at NS
  • Works with various departments to develop reporting to aid in decision-making

Work Experience:

Minimum Level: 3+ Years

Preferred Level: 7+ years

Education:

Minimum: Bachelor's degree

Preferred Majors: Economics, Finance, Engineering, Math, or other quantitative fields

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Mastery of SQL and MS Excel
    • SQL to extract, join, and manipulate data across multiple databases
    • MS Excel for financial analyses
  • Fluency in Python, R, Matlab, etc. considered an asset
  • Strong ability to communicate analysis insights to stakeholders in verbal and written form
  • Effective and organized process manager who structures and executes with minimal guidance

Preferred Experience:

  • Expert at extracting information from large databases and conducting analysis to yield relevant insights
  • Experience with activity-based costing methodology in a network-oriented industry (e.g., rail, aviation, parcel/postal, telecom, etc.) considered an asset
