The Manager, Software Engineering manages the delivery of the Availity Provider Data Platform and its key Products. The Manager provides services to meet the needs of both internal and external clients and takes responsibility for improving processes that are negatively affecting customer satisfaction and relationships, instilling strong engineering practices across their team, and introducing rigor in software engineering. The Manager oversees the analysis, design, engineering, ongoing improvements of software engineering process and operations to achieve engineering excellence, debugging, modification, and continuous delivery of Provider data software for commercial and end user applications. This role is reporting to the Senior Director of Provider Data Management.
This position has corporate functional leadership obligations and is responsible for hiring, supervising and career development of team members, as well as day-to-day team and project management. The Manager will also be required to carry out other duties, projects, or activities as specified by their management.Â

Role qualifications:
Experience and Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Sciences or a related field of study or the equivalent in documented work experience
- 5+ years of experience in managing software engineering teams
- Experience designing, documenting, building, and delivering complex software systems
- Proven experience designing and building scalable and high-performing data-centric systems and applications
- Experience establishing and optimizing software engineering processes
Skills
- Ability to launch and deliver multiple, concurrent IT projects on time and within budget
- Strong relationship management and collaboration skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently under minimal guidance
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external clients/vendors
- Demonstrated ability to use discretion and make sound decisions
- Ability to work under pressure. Maintains composure and professionalism in an interrupt-driven environment. Must be able to multi-task
- Must be flexible and embrace change. Proven understanding of Change Management and “fail fast” approach
- Strong understanding of the software development life cycle
- Understanding of database and data structures, web development methodologies, application design, navigation, and architecture
- Understanding of data modeling, relational databases, data structures and design
- Demonstrated ability to lead large and small groups in requirements planning efforts
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and proven ability to work effectively with all organizational levels
- Excellent judgment, effective problem-resolution skills, and the ability to balance multiple (and often conflicting) demands
Skills that will set you apart from other candidates:
- Knowledge of the Healthcare industry, in particular health care provider business data
- Experience designing, building and maintaining cloud-based applications leveraging Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud platform
- Hands on development experience
- Familiarity with on-premise and cloud data architecture patterns
- Versed in managing multiple data pipelines and different data file formats
What you will be doing:
Applications Development
- Manage the development of products and solutions for Availity’s Provider from business process architecture and design through ongoing support. This includes working directly with product and customers in both a product and delivery capacity.
- Manage the development, enhancement and maintenance of code to support strategic efforts and ensure ongoing systems performance and integrity
- Manage the improvement processes that impact internal operations, customer satisfaction and relationships (e.g. Agile, DevOps, etc.)
Applications Administration
- Provide input to the business technology and human resources plan
- Ensure work, information, ideas, and technology flow freely across the departments
- Evaluates the Provider Portfolio teams’ performance and progress against goals
- Recommends buy versus build decisions
- Minimizes barriers for managing contractors and vendor representatives
Leadership Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor two or more scrum teams
- Manage the development activities for the product pipeline and resourcing for the Provider Portfolio
- Work with internal and external customer to vet product needs and deliverables
- Lead developer culture for the Provider Portfolio and extends culture initiatives to the rest of Availity
- Provide advice, guidance, encouragement and constructive feedback
- Create synergies with other teams/departments
- Establish measurable individual and team objectives that are aligned with business and organizational goals
- Document and presents constructive performance assessments, and sets developmental goals
- Recognize and rewards associates commensurate with performance
- Manage human resource related activities such as hiring, coaching, and mentoring as appropriate
- Identifies the roles, skills and knowledge required and ensures staff has the resources and skills needed to support all work initiatives.
- Forecasts new skill requirements based on emerging technologies
- Participates in IT workforce deployment activities
- Tracks budgets, resources, hours for major development work, and collectively assesses maintenance efforts
- Defining and tracking team metrics
- Monitoring efforts to eliminate duplicate design and promote solutions that reduce or eliminate technical debt
- Analyzing trends in technology and assessing the impact of how the emerging technologies may impact product delivery
