We have an excellent opportunity for a Manager Substation Engineering to join our Alliant Energy team in Cedar Rapids, IA. In this role you will oversee our substation engineering and substation drafting team responsible for designing, planning, supporting construction and installation of substations structures, systems, and components. The ideal candidate will bring skills and energy to inspire this customer focused team to think beyond, be bold and innovative in addressing the challenges and opportunities of the utility industry. We are looking for a hands-on, highly ethical leader who has a passion for mentoring, coaching, and developing employees. You must be a diligent individual with a dedication to quality, accuracy, and the ability to organize and prioritize engineering decisions. Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with customers and others throughout the organization is vital.
This is a hybrid-remote position reporting to our office in Cedar Rapids, IA. Travel is estimated to be 10% and consists primarily of day trips with some overnights required. Candidates must reside in Iowa.
What you will do
- Responsible for developing and implementing an operating plan for the substation engineering organization. This includes the vision, mission, guiding principles, goals, strategies, budget, action plans, and performance measurements required to ensure cost effective electric asset planning that is in line with corporate goals.
- Helps to establish and apply organizational values in the compliance to all environmental, safety and other laws and regulations.
- Demonstrates leadership in the area of safety. This requires observing and enforcing OSHA and company safety rules and practices, encouraging safe work behaviors, and promptly correcting conditions and unsafe behaviors which may lead to accidents.
- Directs and supervises engineers and contractors involved in performing advanced, major and complex construction project work. Monitors performance and conformance to all contractual and specification requirements.
- Directs project teams to deliver projects on time and on budget in a safe and environmentally conscious manner to the satisfaction of business unit management.
- Develops a sound working relationship with engineering consultants, contractors, and equipment manufacturer's representatives to the application of their services and products.
- Directs the verification of the benefits and cost savings resulting from completed engineering projects.
- Consults with various business unit representatives to promote service partnership linkage to support their needs.
- Promotes continuous improvement in all processes.
- Prepares necessary documentation for obtaining authorization and permits from regulatory agencies for business unit projects and testifies at public hearings.
- Keeps fully informed of related state-of-the-art technology processes, systems and equipment. Participates in R&D activities and partnerships.
- Performs all management duties including, but not limited to, budgeting, hiring, performance reviews, coordinating and scheduling work, salary recommendations, discipline, ensure employees report to work fit for duty, leadership, grievance resolution, coaching & counseling, models Alliant Energy's Core Values at all times.
Education Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree Emphasis in engineering or related area is preferred
- Certification Professional Engineer certification is preferred
Required Experience
- 5 years of related experience
- 3 years supervisory experience or equivalent. (Equivalent supervisory experiences may include project management, providing work direction, leadership experience through temporary assignments, roles in the community or external organizations, or other demonstrated leadership experience.)
