The primary function of the Managing Corporate Counsel position is to identify, evaluate, and manage legal risk, as well as provide legal guidance to business partners as they engage in various aspects of commerce and operations. The Managing Corporate Counsel may also hold responsibility for oversight of one or more compliance functions for the enterprise (HR compliance, etc.). This leader will effectively exhibit JD Finish Line's core values of Customer, People, Winning, Community, and Financial Responsibility in everything they do by performing the following key duties:

  • Negotiates and drafts contracts and other legal documents in order to prevent/minimize disputes and potential liability.
  • Verifies proper economic points, creatively drafts new language and/or documents if necessary, and consistently strives to improve existing language and points in documents.
  • Applies subject matter expertise for at least one of the Legal Department's critical support functions.
  • Maintains and advances business relationships in area(s) of expertise and identifies and implements appropriate risk reduction methods and tools.
  • Seeks to extend the Department's "one team" approach to risk reduction for the organization by engaging in miscellaneous generalist legal support.
  • Manages special projects within our outside areas of subject matter expertise that are consistent with the Department's needs to contribute to the organization's legal needs.
  • Thinks proactively and aggressively in all negotiations.
  • Evaluates and advises on legal risks associated with all business proposals submitted for review to reduce exposure to liability for any potential legal claims or sanctions in a timely manner.
  • Provides advice and counsel across all business units regarding legal risk to corporate interests and on corporate policies, procedures and initiatives.
  • Participates in and provides oversight of investigations into matters arising out of third party and internal claims.
  • Conducts research and analysis of specific legal questions and prepares memoranda and opinions setting forth research results, expert legal interpretations, recommendations and conclusions, including proposed implementation plans.
  • Develops collaborative relationships with leaders in all business units.
  • Develops legal expertise as necessary to meet the needs of the corporate legal department.
  • Ensures the timely and efficient management and completion of a multitude of varied projects.
  • Responsibilities include assigning and directing work; hiring and training appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Directly supervises employees with the responsibilities to include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Additional duties and projects as required.

Required Education and/or Experience

Juris Doctor degree and at least 8 - 10 years of business/general corporate legal experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Internal JD Finish Line experience is a plus.

Required Computer and/or Technical Skills

Should have basic to intermediate knowledge and abilities with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint or Google Suite equivalents.
