The Managing Director Coverage Counsel leads and directs a team of Coverage Attorneys engaged in providing legal advice to claim professionals and other internal constituents by analyzing and providing counsel in connection with a broad range of complex coverage issues. Oversees workloads of other attorneys and contributes to team by managing own (individual contributor) workload. Focuses on objectives to set direction and drive superior results. Has an understanding of the financial/insurance industry sectors in which CNA operates and stays informed on relevant insurance industry trends. Uses metrics, information analysis and accesses technology resources to drive desired behaviors and results.
The individual will have a minimum of ten years coverage experience. The incumbent will be the point person for the Company's legal support needed for catastrophic first party events (such as hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, tornado, deep freezes, etc.,). Preference will be given to candidates who are experienced coverage litigators to serve as a backdrop for this role. The ideal candidates will likewise have broader experience providing legal counsel to commercial and specialty claims organizations. Additionally the candidate will possess top-tier legal acumen, judgment, analytical, legal research, communication, and coverage skills.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
• Leads and directs the work activities and has full management responsibility for the performance of assigned coverage staff. Exercises full management authority, including performance reviews, pay decisions, recruitment, discipline, termination and other personnel actions. Assigns work to coverage attorneys and paralegals, monitors work and coordinates with others as needed. Optimizes talent in accordance with CNA needs and expectations, driving desired behavior and superior results.
• Reviews and discusses coverage determination with claim professionals and other business partners to enable case resolution with an appropriate sense of urgency.
• Makes informed strategic and operational business decisions by identifying and analyzing trends and improvement opportunities through the effective use of resources, tools and metrics.
• Participates in the development and execution of strategic and operational plans based on departmental and corporate goals and objectives. Secures necessary resources to achieve area objectives and allocates resources to optimize budget.
• Responsible for the ongoing management of staff by attracting talent, setting clear direction, providing appropriate guidance, managing performance, recognizing contributions, and developing capabilities .
• Maintains transparent communication by appropriately communicating organization information through department meetings, one-on-one meetings, and email, IM, and regular interpersonal communication.
• Ensures quality by assuring compliance with best practices, and developing and delivering training as needed.
• Works collaboratively with staff, clients, claim professionals, underwriting, risk control and other third parties to ensure that department staff is trained on appropriate procedures and practices.
• Requires strong communication and diplomacy skills to guide, influence, and convince others, particularly colleagues in other areas and/or external customers. Communicates regularly with leadership and staff regarding operational effectiveness, continuous improvement opportunities and results.
• Stays up to date on legal trends and developments as well as insurance industry issues, increasing overall insurance business acumen.
May perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
• In-depth coverage experience and senior level knowledge of the insurance industry, insurance products, claims principles and legal landscape, with emphasis, with first party, CAT support, specialty and commercial healthcare
• Strong management skills with the ability to coach, mentor and develop subordinate staff.
• Independent judgment and ability to effectively manage internal and external business relationships.
• Has an understanding of the financial/insurance industry sectors in which CNA operates and understands the relative positioning of the company's products and services vs. the competition.
• Superior verbal and written communication skills. Has excellent negotiation and analytical skills with the ability to develop and implement tactical strategies in line with business goals and objectives.
• Ability to effectively manage and resolve ambiguous and complex issues and situations.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite as well as other business-related software including legal files management and billing software.
• Focuses on objectives to set direction and drive superior results.
• Uses Metrics and information analysis and accesses technology resources as needed.
• Builds a competitive organization by attracting, managing, developing and retaining the talent needed to win. Helps other to excel through collaboration and building strong relationships.

Education & Experience
• Bachelor's degree with JD, and admission to the bar of at least one state.
• Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related work experience in claims and/or law firm with a progressively increasing level of responsibility, including at least 6 years handling coverage matters in the insurance industry.
• May require specific technical/functional area legal experience. Previous management and leadership experience is preferred.

In California, Colorado, Connecticut, New York and Washington, the standard base pay range for this role is $78,500 to $301,400 annually.Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
