The Managing Director, ESG at Stern IR, is integral to building and leading the Stern IR ESG Advisory practice. You take an entrepreneurial lead and provide solutions-oriented ESG evaluations to our premier client base. In this role, you are responsible for monitoring the ESG landscape and evaluating how emerging trends and requirements will impact the firm’s clientele. As the primary project manager to Stern IR clients engaged in these services, the MD ESG will design and operationalize offerings for ESG advisory and reporting. Through an ESG lens, you will advance our mission to provide thought-leading IR counsel to biotechnology and healthcare companies in an agency setting.
Essential functions of the job include but are not limited to:
- Design and operationalize an ESG advisory product, including methodology based on current state of the market, ratings agencies, SEC disclosure requirements, corporate governance standards; and infrastructure, such as database access and template materials to support future engagements
- Prepare marketing materials and participate in pitching for new ESG engagements.
- Oversee growth of the offering and partner with Stern’s Senior Leadership Team to scale the team:
- Provide expert guidance and bespoke ESG strategies – translating evaluations into actionable solutions, materials and disclosures – to serve client needs in advisory and reporting
- Manage all ESG projects, executing program deliverables against budget and timelines
- Serve as resident ESG expert to the firm’s IR Advisory practice by closely follow news and developments relating to environmental sustainability, social and human capital, and corporate governance, monitoring for updates to industry standards and best practices
- Provide timely updates and thought leadership at the intersection of IR and ESG, both to Stern IR account teams and directly to C-suite executives across the firm’s clientele.
Qualifications
Required: Bachelor’s degree
Other required:
- 8+ years of experience in ESG, environmental sustainability, or CSR, with direct experience in ESG strategy development and reporting and sector expertise in biotech or healthcare.
- Deep understanding of ESG reporting frameworks (e.g., SASB, GRI, TCFD, etc.) and regulatory environment (e.g., SEC, SFDR, Nasdaq, etc.), experience analyzing ESG data and familiarity with ESG scoring and ratings agencies (Sustainalytics, MSCI, ISS, etc.).
- Prior experience publishing ESG reports.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team and history of managing others.
- Entrepreneurial spirit; capable of developing a new product with limited oversight.
Preferred:
- Advanced degree, i.e., M.B.A. or M.S. in Sustainability.
- Relevant work experience gained in a consulting role.
- Experience managing corporate client relationships and large-scale projects against budget and timelines.
- Experience managing and analyzing large, amorphous data sets; synthesizing qualitative inputs to produce actionable insights.
- Confident writer and presenter, comfortable in a variety of C-Suite scenarios, with ability to influence.
