Summary

The Managing Editor, reporting to the Deputy Director, Curriculum & Content, is a highly organized, seasoned writer and editor, a collaborative team player, and an impassioned social-justice advocate who knows K-12 education. The managing editor is comfortable leading, making decisions and working in a fast-paced environment and is adept at working on multiple projects at the same time. The managing editor helps actualize the strategy for the Curriculum & Content team by leading a team of editors and relying on a combination of staff and freelancers to produce the magazine, create web content, develop learning resources and publications, and manage outreach and promotional campaigns. They are a skilled people leader.

Primary Job Functions:

  • Work closely with the Deputy Director, Curriculum & Content, to manage production of each issue (two per year—print and digital) of Learning for Justice magazine;
  • Supervise staff and freelancers and oversee production of priority social justice education resources and publications and editorial content to shape a public narrative for change;
  • Supervise a diverse team, providing mentoring and coaching to support the work;
  • Collaborate in curating LFJ’s resources by reviewing, validating, researching, and updating learning materials aligned with the department’s key priorities;
  • Assist in hiring, training and monitoring staff performance and development goals, assigning duties and conducting performance review;
  • Work closely with all members of the Learning for Justice staff to effectively communicate program initiatives, including on social media and in the LFJ newsletter, eblasts, web and print ads, direct mail, partner cross-marketing and press releases;
  • Research, develop and edit LFJ content, including resource publications, curriculum and articles.
  • Ensure that all materials published by Learning for Justice are accurate, grammatically correct, free from error and fit both the style and philosophy of the program;
  • Supervise three to four direct reports; and
  • Other duties as assigned.           

Qualifications –

Education and Related Work Experience:

  • A minimum of three (3) years editorial management experience;
  • At least five (5) years of demonstrated writing and editing experience;
  • Familiarity with and commitment to educational equity and social justice issues; and
  • High school diploma or GED required.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Superb writing, editing and research skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage editorial workflow;
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equity and inclusion;
  • High level of organization and the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities and to help staff prioritize competing deadlines;
  • Proven ability to manage and support diverse teams;
  • Must have creative thinking and problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to work independently under limited supervision;
  • Ability to communicate persuasively, both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to maintain departmental voice in all written materials and to coach others to write in this voice;
  • Must have experience editing for a particular editorial style (AP, MLA, Chicago);
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative work environment while working remotely;
  • Ability to sustain, grow and mentor a diverse pool of writers is essential;
  • Commitment to the ideals of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion; and
  • Commitment to fostering an anti-racist work culture and to anti-racist principles and learning.

Compensation:

This is an exempt role, and the minimum starting salary is $105,840 annually.  Salary is commensurate with experience.

Work Designation:

This role has the following work designation options: 

  • Distant Remote:  Will work remotely and are not expected to work in the states in which the SPLC has an office or in an SPLC office. They may be required to attend occasional meetings or activities in the states in which the SPLC has an office or elsewhere.
  • Local Remote:  Will work remotely but is expected to attend work-related activities that occur at the SPLC offices or in the states in which the SPLC operates.
  • Telework:  Will work at an SPLC office at least three days per week and may work two days per week from an alternative work location.

Other Special Considerations:

This job is performed under general office conditions and is not subject to any strenuous physical demands or dangerous conditions.
