- You will be required to possess and maintain a current valid United States driverβs license.
- Mandatory training is required by some engine companies in order to be qualified to perform warranty work on various gasoline and/or diesel engines.
- Incumbent must obtain dealer certification of current inventory of outboard engines within a minimum of 12 months of hire.
- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
- You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: The ability to perform the work of a Marine Machinery Mechanic without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by the following: 1) Repairing, overhauling and installing marine engines and equipment such as propulsion machinery, auxiliary generators, pumps, compressors and fire fighting machinery on a variety of marine craft. 2) Using test equipment such as compression gauges, timing gauges, manometers, and injection testing machines to locate and repair worn, dirty or maladjusted components and parts; 3) Using checklists to inspect and clean mechanical systems on marine craft including brakes, electrical systems, fuel injection systems, plugs and carburetors; 4) Making adjustments to valve lash, injector timing, and fuel and control settings. This announcement uses the Defense Industrial Base, Major Range and Test Facilities direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.
This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
This position requires exposure to high noise levels.
You may be required to become Facility Response Team (FRT) qualified.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work requires long periods of constant standing and walking on the tugboat while underway. May be required to work in cramped or awkward positions. During emergencies may be required to endure long periods of work without rest. Must be able to climb vertical ladders and step over three foot bulwark on rocking tug, which requires the use of legs, hands, and arms. Will be required to lift and move lines weighting up to 44 pounds. Must have peripheral vision that will enable the incumbent to avoid falls and moving objects. Must have sufficient hearing to hear verbal commands over surrounding noise of gasoline & diesel engines, tugboat and ship operations.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Incumbent will work outside in all kinds of weather and inside an engine room. Repair work might be performed at docks, marinas or in the shop. Will be subjected outdoor to hot sun, spray, rain, sleet and ice. Incumbent will be subjected indoors to heat and noise from an operating diesel engine or various hop equipment during testing or repair phases. Incumbent will be exposed to the following: industrial dirt, dust, grease, oil, industrial fumes and airborne particles. Possible injury from falls due to slippery footing and erratic motion. Industrial noises generated by operating machinery and equipment with the possibility of hearing loss. Eye hazards will exist in most areas and/or in certain operations. Organic growths such as sea growth, barnacles and shellfish in dry docks, salt water systems, and other areas exposed to sea water. Must be physically able to stand high temperatures in the vessel engine rooms.
