Market Specialist - Innovation

Description

This position is responsible for supporting economic development related to primarily EnergyTech, CleanTech, and Sustainability startups with an additional focus on supporting startups participating in local accelerators, or which align with business needs. The successful candidate must be able to communicate effectively with all levels of employees - in particular, the candidate must be comfortable facilitating discussions and maximizing group interactions and participation. Interaction with multiple System and Operating Company departments is necessary. Portions of the work produced by this position may be subject to review by the State of Alabama Department of Commerce or the Innovation Corporation.

Job Responsibilities Include:

  • Build mentor network of Subject Matter Experts within APC and beyond that can be used by startups working with APC to advance their business model.
  • Coordinate internal accelerator grant applications - Growing Alabama and any other grant application for startup accelerators that may further company interests.
  • Develop a Playbook that will be used to work with internal partners and external partners to help nurture local startup ecosystems and to be able to document activity.
  • Policy watch/development - monitor and actively participate as needed in Legislature initiatives and other activity that could create sources of funding for accelerator efforts or impact what is considered on a statewide level and which may impact any efforts to support venture activity in Alabama.
  • Screening level support to find companies that may be candidates for Techstars EnergyTech and to find other local startups that may be of benefit to Alabama Power.
  • Identification of potential pilots that may result from working with a startup. Potential pilots are then to be discussed amongst our partner network to determine appetite for engagement if selected.
  • Ability to coordinate internal engagement supporting startup activity. Which includes key business partners (R&D, New Ventures, Treasury, Public Relations, Technology Organization, etc and varying depending on individual companies).
  • Work with startups participating in local accelerators by helping to provide contacts internal to SO that would be useful for the companies involved and think of connections that need to be made externally as well.
  • Supporting various accelerators throughout the service territory by attending local events and by participating in pitch day contributions etc. (ACN, Launchpad, etc.)
  • Coordinate startup support related activity with similarly situated individuals at other companies within Alabama.
  • Cultivate and increase innovation at Alabama Power and within the service territory.
Candidates with the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities are encouraged to apply:

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree is preferred; Master's Degree is preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Experiences

  • Proven record of pursuing entrepreneurial endeavors
  • Ability to build a network internal and external to the company (city or state officials is a plus)
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate group discussions
  • Proficiency in all MS Office products
  • Ability to think outside of what constitutes a traditional investor-owned utility and be able to identify and quantify associated risks
  • Perform job accurately and timely with a consideration for the use of supporting data to inform and guide decisions.
  • Able to work independently
  • Comfortable making educated assumptions versus providing textbook precision
  • Ability to effectively communicate (written and orally) unfamiliar concepts and ideas
  • Ability to persuade others
  • Proven ability as a self-starter and performing successfully under deadlines
  • Proven ability to manage changing priorities
