General Summary:
This position will design across media and lead a team of visual designers to elevate the deliverables of Marketing through modern, user-centered design. This role combines that of a senior designer with a design manager - so we're looking for someone who is passionate about both creating great design that drives business goals and motivating and developing other designers. This role is one of three design leaders in the Marketing organization, so collaboration and ability to align on design direction are key.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Work as a design team member on individual assignments about 70% of the time and manage performance and development of 3-5 designers approximately 30% of the time
- Create inspiring, strategic, and innovative designs that work in a fully integrated manner and appropriately align with key audiences
- Manage team of 3-5 visual designers; assess performance and give feedback, provide guidance on upcoming work, and promote growth and development
- Collaborate with the Principal Design Director and UX Director to develop design templates, standards, and style guidelines for all media
- Act as a lead motivator of other members of Marketing to develop design solutions, including, but not limited to digital, web, interactive, social, traditional, and print materials
- Be an integral team member on one of several small, focused teams within Marketing, where there is a technical specialist in writing, front end development, information architecture, email, content, and project management, all focused on driving toward goals required of their team
- Ensure that design is applied consistently by overseeing the use of brand guidelines, color, font, icons, and other artifacts, and ensures compliance with Accessibility Standards
- Effectively visualize and create concepts into the end product, giving direction on photography style, imagery, typography, and iconography
- Provide cross-team support, standardization, best practices, and interconnection
- Knowledge and thirst to investigate, innovate, and develop creative trends
Job Specifications
- Bachelor's degree in design field or equivalent experience
- 7+ years of experience in design
- 2+ years of managing other designers
- Ability to work on many projects and team in parallel.
- Have a strong design background with a superior portfolio and knowledge of both traditional and digital media
- Thrive in fast paced environment - able to take strategy and run with it creatively
- Demonstrated ability to edit, coach and develop other designers
- Confidently "sells" ideas to senior leadership, business partners and creative teams
- Passionate for the art of idea development and all things creative
- Broad range of experiences from different industries and practices
- Passion for results - bringing forward new methods or tools to help advance customer experience
- Demonstrates analytical ability and critical thinking skills
- Experience designing for multiple devices, such as mobile and tablet
- Expert using the Adobe Creative Suite
- Experience in participating on project teams and ability to communicate design processes, ideas, and solutions clearly and effectively to teams and clients.
- Ability to resolve issues and conflicts with team members
- Operates with a sense of urgency to meet tight deadlines.
- Develop and promote Accessibility standards across the organization.
- A deep technical knowledge of the complete design process from brainstorming to end product
- The ability to be a leader but to also know how to motivate team members
- The patience and determination to resolve issues in a timely manner

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
$72,100.00-$126,300.00
Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including performance-based incentives, healthcare benefits, insurance benefits, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual plans.
