Job Summary
The Vehicle Systems Division (VSD) sits at the center of the ideas and data behind current and future systems supplying innovative research and development; technical evaluations during the acquisition process; conceptual and detailed design; assembly, integration, and test; and operational support. Comprised primarily of highly-trained mechanical and aerospace engineers, VSD provides national expertise in the areas of vehicle engineering; guidance, navigation, and controls; robotics; electro-mechanical devices; embedded systems; fluid mechanics; propulsion; thermal control; orbital mechanics; mechanisms; structures; structural dynamics; and dynamic environments.
The Vehicle Engineering Department continues to expand in areas of mass and mechanical properties, assembly, integration, and test support; modeling and analysis of multidiscipline systems; and advanced autonomy. We are seeking a Mass Properties Engineer who is inquisitive, motivated, has outstanding technical skills, and has uncompromising technical integrity and objectivity to contribute to our growing team in the Vehicle Mass and Mechanical Properties Section.
This full-time position will be a hybrid work model with remote consideration. Nominally based in El Segundo, CA, this role will combine regular onsite work with remote flexibility as the business needs allow. Additional locations to consider will be Chantilly, VA.
What You'll Be Doing
  • Provide launch vehicle and spacecraft mass properties support to multiple programs
  • Coordinate with management to initiate studies to identify and address current technical issues in Mass Properties Engineering and alert management to current or perceived future technical issues
  • Identify and develop digital engineering tools to facilitate the analysis of mass and mechanical properties and advance the state-of-the-art of the mass properties discipline
  • Perform independent analyses in support of recurring launch campaign verification activities such as bearing weight analysis, vehicle weighing, etc. and support certification activities for new entrant Launch Vehicles services
  • Participate in system-wide IV&V assessments of the development, distribution, use, and verification of mass properties data within contractor programs, identifying appropriate corrective actions if needed
  • Ability to communicate effectively and develop relationships with customers, Aerospace and contractor personnel

What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field or equivalent is required
  • 2 years of applicable professional experience in mass and mechanical properties discipline is required
  • Moderate level of proficiency in a programming language such as Python, C++, or similar
  • Demonstrated ability to creatively solve problems
  • Willingness to occasionally travel domestically and to support customer needs, approximately 10% (as required)
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

How You Can Stand Out
It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
  • Advanced degree in a STEM field or equivalent is strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of launch vehicle and satellite test standards and Aerospace mission assurance is highly desirable
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct detailed technical analyses and apply knowledge independently with minimal guidance is preferred
  • 5 years of applicable professional experience in mass and mechanical properties discipline is strongly preferred
  • High level of proficiency with one or more programming languages such as Python, C++, or similar

We offer a competitive compensation package where you'll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to our business. The grade-based pay range for this job is listed below. Individual salaries within that range are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge and skills.
