Materials Engineer – Body Engineering

Your Role:
As a Materials Engineer, you will be supporting the Body in White (BIW), Closures in White (CIW), and Body Systems teams with their materials and coating. You will be the lead when it comes to material selection, specifications and design best practices, testing required to properly characterize material properties and performance, and validate assumptions, as well as the corrosion strategy for the body structure. You will work in an exciting fast-paced environment to develop and deliver safe products and ensure that all timing, integration and requirements are achieved.  Your challenge will be to balance state of the art material options with industry best practices and experience to ensure our products are on the cutting edge, but with risks mitigated when it comes to performance, cost and timing.
Responsibilities
- Work with external suppliers as well as internal Design, CAE and Manufacturing teams to develop the list of approved Aluminum, Steel and other structural materials and gauges for use on future programs. This requires a balance of performance and light weighting with supply chain complexity, manufacturing complexity, and cost.
- Work with our suppliers and internal supplier quality team to continue to grow and develop our Material Specifications for our metals, adhesives, conversion coatings, etc.
- Develop and validate our corrosion strategy for future programs and help to troubleshoot and provide guidance for any corrosion related findings that may be discovered on the current program.
- Lead test campaigns with material and test house suppliers for the development, characterization, and validation of our materials. This applies to mechanical, environmental, and potentially manufacturing related aspects for metallic, and non-metallic materials and coatings.
- Work with the CAE team, test houses, and material suppliers to develop the MAT cards and material curves (such as S-N) needed to accurately predict failure in any new structural materials as it relates to static, dynamic, and fatigue events.
- Provide guidance on coating selection for fasteners, sheet metal, castings, and extrusions and work to document best practices in deign guides.
Basic Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree or PhD in Material Science
- 10+ years minimum experience in automotive or aerospace materials engineering (or M&P)
- The ability to work affectively cross-functionally in a dynamic environment via excellent communication skills, the ability to form positive working relationships with various personality types, and the determination to deliver
- Knowledge of automotive design and development process, system requirements and best practices
- Understanding of automotive body structure including interfacing systems and components
- Knowledge of the materials, processes and technologies used to develop body structures and body systems components
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- Excellent commercial and financial awareness
- Proficient using Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Flexibility to travel to domestic and global material suppliers if needed.
