Mechanical Engineer II

Our Mechanical engineers research, design, develop, test, certify, deploy and improve cutting edge products and services. These cover a very wide range from advanced mission payloads and electromechanical systems through highly integrated orbital and space exploration systems. You'll conceptualize and deliver complex mechanical structures and systems and your technical duties include the design and development of new products and processes throughout the product lifecycle.
This position is full-time, on-site at our facility in Durham, North Carolina, supporting the Mechanisms and Motion Systems product line in the development of innovative spaceflight electromechanical products. Learn more about our products.
Sierra Space-based in Louisville, CO with operations in Madison, WI, Durham, NC, Huntsville, AL, Houston, TX, and Kennedy Space Center, FL-designs and manufactures the Dream Chaser spaceplane and other advanced spacecraft, commercial space destinations, satellites, propulsion and environmental systems, spacecraft subsystems and components for the U.S. government (including NASA), commercial customers, and international organizations. Must-haves:

• Bachelor's of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering discipline and typically 2 or more years of relevant experience
• Practical knowledge of engineering principles and practices, especially mechanisms.
• Experience with Computer Aided Engineering tools (NX and Solidworks, preferred).
• Familiarity working in multi-disciplinary design and development teams
• Understanding of applying and interpreting Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5.

Preferred:

• Experience with electro-mechanical products (motors, gears, bearings, position/force feedback, etc.), especially with a concentration in mechatronics and robotics.
• Understanding of Engineering Simulation such as Finite Element structural Analysis (FEA) and Thermal Analysis
• Background in the Aerospace, Defense, Medical Device, Automotive, Automation, Robotics, or similar industry.
• Knowledge of Military and/or NASA standards and industry-standard mechanical design principles, to include, but not limited to parametric design, model-based definition, material hardware selection, manufacturing, and production processes

Salary Range: $72,059.06 - $99,081.2
