Mechanical Engineer Intern (Summer)

The Elevator Pitch 

Do you want to gain hands-on experience in Mechanical Engineering? Are you eager to learn and develop critical skills for your future career? Do you thrive in analyzing problems and proposing creative design solutions?

In this 10-week Mechanical Engineering Intern role, you will create a concept design and prototype of a wheel brake system that will directly impact our Evolv Express system. Not only will you be gaining critical skills in mechanical engineering, but you will also have the opportunity to be exposed to the ins and outs of the company as a whole while getting exposure to all departments and how they operate.

Success in the Role: What are performance outcomes over the first half and second half of the internship you will work toward completing? 

In the first 5 weeks, you will:

• Understand Evolv, our product and culture, what we do, and why we do it
• Collaborate with the engineering team to understand the design challenge
• Present several concepts to be prototyped

In the last 5 weeks, you will:

• Choose a final design concept
• Help to prototype the design
• Present your final design and/or results for peer review

• Demonstrate final design to the product team
• Have a better idea of what you want or don’t want out of your career

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

• Create a concept design and prototype of a wheel brake system for Outdoor Express 1.0
• Develop a presentation to the engineering team that outlines the engineering problem and presents several solutions
• Create computer aided design models using Solidworks
• Fabricate prototype parts of the selected solution. The prototypes using our in-house 3D printer, computerized numerical control (CNC) router, CNC mill, or externally at machine shops
• Test the prototype in real-world environments

• Present the solution with cost estimates to the product team
• Develop business savviness by sitting in on department Q&As and Executive Leadership presentations to gain knowledge from individuals in different departments and levels at Evolv

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team? 

• You will be joining the R&D Team and reporting to the Senior Director of Mechanical Engineering. The Mechanical Engineering team is comprised of 7 team members with a range of experience levels from entry, mid and senior.
• The team culture is one based on building trust, collaboration, on-going development through kindness, authenticity, courage, drive and fun!

Where is the role located? 

• The location of this role is based in Waltham, MA with some flexibility in being remote some days.
• This is a paid internship with a range of $15-$21 an hour, dependent on your academic school year.
