Job Summary
The Vehicle Systems Division (VSD) sits at the center of the ideas and data behind current and future systems supplying innovative research and development; technical evaluations during the acquisition process; conceptual and detailed design; assembly, integration, and test; and operational support. Comprised primarily of highly-trained mechanical and aerospace engineers, VSD provides national expertise in the areas of vehicle engineering; guidance, navigation, and controls; robotics; electro-mechanical devices; embedded systems; fluid mechanics; propulsion; thermal control; orbital mechanics; mechanisms; structures; structural dynamics; and dynamic environments.
The Mechanical Systems Department (MSD) is responsible for the integrity and reliable operation of moving mechanical assemblies, and separation/ deployment devices typical of spacecraft and launch vehicle systems, including missile systems. MSD subject matter experts specialize in the design, analysis, and testing of actuators, deployment and separation mechanisms, and precision ball bearings assemblies, such as control-moment gyroscopes, momentum and reaction wheels, solar-array drive mechanisms, deployment and separation mechanisms, and other payload mechanisms. Tasks typically involve interactions with other Aerospace technical disciplines, program offices, and contractors in support of our customer's mission needs.
This is a Retiree Casual III part-time employment position. Casual employment is normally between 10- 40 hours a week, often non-continuous, irregular, and infrequent hours.
Nominally based in El Segundo, CA, this role will be a hybrid work model with various nationwide locations available with remote flexibility as the business needs allow.
What You'll Be Doing
  • Provide surge support to the department senior staff on multiple programs, working independently with internal and external customers as a technical authority or consultant.
  • Provide technical expertise and mentor the department junior staff in the area of precision mechanisms, multi-body dynamics, and ball bearing analysis.
  • Provide oversight, guidance, and technical advice on customer projects, which may include specialized analytical and experimental studies for spacecraft and launch vehicle control system hardware.
  • Verify contractor designs, approaches, and overall system performance.
  • Prepare written and oral reports of organization's activities, issues, and accomplishments to higher management, subordinates, and teaming organizations

What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field or equivalent is required
  • 12 years of experience in moving mechanisms, deployable systems, launch systems, or other aerospace mechanical systems-related field is required
  • Experience with a broad range of hardware comprising moving mechanical assemblies (MMA) and other mechanical devices typical of spacecraft and launch vehicles.
  • Experience training and mentoring less experienced technical staff
  • Experience providing technical support in multi-program, multi-agency environments with government program office personnel, engineering support, and contractors
  • Willingness to occasionally travel and to work off-business hours to support customer needs, approximately 10% (as required)
  • Casual employment is normally for fewer than 20 hours a week, usually non-continuous, irregular, and infrequent hours
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

How You Can Stand Out
It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
  • Advanced degree in a STEM field or equivalent is strongly preferred
  • 15 or more years of increasing, applicable professional or educational experience is preferred
  • Experience in design and analysis of moving mechanical systems
  • Experience with test plans, procedures, and methods for MMAs.
  • Experience in design and analysis of release devices, deployment mechanisms, and capture latches, using parts such as bearings, fasteners, springs, dampers, gears, and solid / liquid lubrication
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, types of analyses to examine design alternatives, investigate failures, verify performance and/or check compliance with applicable specifications
  • The ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with management, program management, customers, contractors, and colleagues is essential

The grade-based pay range for this job is listed below. Individual salaries within that range are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge and skills.
