Technology Infrastructure Engineering Manager

JOB SUMMARY:

The Technology Infrastructure Engineering Manager is responsible for providing guidance and support to a team of four engineers and two analysts as they develop and implement critical technology infrastructure solutions across a fleet of TO-managed facilities, telecom tower structures and operating company key operational facilities. The manager will ensure compliance with established standards as well as the development of new standards as required. The manager will also be responsible for establishing and managing the operating company capital budgets associated with TO-managed projects and will provide monthly budget projection updates to technology leadership. This role will also have O&M budgeting responsibility for TO-managed facilities, purchase order approval and invoice approval responsibilities for material and vendor-provided services.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills )

  • Degree requirements:
  • BS in engineering (electrical, mechanical, or civil) or a related field
OR

  • Ten years' field experience in direct support of engineering, implementation, and support of telecommunications/technology facility ancillary equipment such as: DC Power systems, UPSs, standby generators and transfer switches, telemetry systems, HVAC systems, building and site compound infrastructure, telecommunications tower structures and components.
  • Five years of management experience preferred
  • Five years engineering/implementing critical infrastructure solutions for computer rooms, decentralized telecommunication sites, or similar experience
  • Five years of demonstrated ability and experience in managing and prioritizing large scale projects
  • Five years of demonstrated ability in overseeing and reviewing methods of procedure (MOP) for critical tasks and operations
  • Ability to understand technology issues, interpret financial reports and apply sound business and financial principles along with the ability to communicate issues, policies, and changes effectively at all levels
  • Ability to provide strategic leadership and develop departmental goals for a geographically dispersed employee base
  • Demonstrate problem-solving and analytical skills with high-level decision-making and influencing ability

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

(Strategic Planning & Compliance)

The Technology Infrastructure Engineering Manager provides leadership for strategic planning, engineering, and implementation of critical infrastructure for Southern Company's TO-managed telecom/network/OT facilities as well as engineering and consulting services for Electric and GAS key operational facilities. This includes overall facility integrity, power management (utility switchgear, emergency generator, UPS, DC plant systems), heat rejection systems, site telemetry, equipment installation standards, telecom tower engineering & maintenance, FCC & FAA compliance as well as property management.

The engineering manager is also responsible for providing strategic input to infrastructure owners regarding major projects as it relates to where equipment should be hosted or migrated when facilities are approaching end-of-life or if there are better options available.

(Consulting)

The Technology Infrastructure Engineering Manager duties/tasks are complex in that very few scenarios related to OPCO (Operating Company) major initiatives are the same. Southern Telecom, Southern Linc and the operating company co-location revenue teams drive out very different projects as well. This requires contractual research between the OPCO and third parties, accounting procedure research - sometimes involving regulated and non-regulated segments of the business - all resulting in major decisions around these various opportunities.

(Resource Management)

To ensure the efficient use of engineering resources, the manager is also responsible for attending meetings and communicating with project leadership at the operating companies, Southern Telecom, Southern Linc, GAS and internal Infrastructure Services teams regarding project scope and resource assignments prior to engineer or analyst assignment.

(Capital & O&M Budget Responsibilities)

The manager is responsible for $4 million in operating company capital and a $1.5 million department operating expense budget. There are monthly projection and tracking responsibilities as well as Maximo purchase order and associated Oracle invoice approvals.

    WORK LOCATION:

    The successful candidate must be able to reside and work within the states of Alabama, Georgia, or Mississippi as most of the engineering, project work and employees are located in these three states. This is a hybrid work environment consisting of working from home and in the office.
