Our Engineering Design team in Farmington Hills, MI is looking for an Architect / Design Manager to assist with the design, evaluation and implementation of new buildings and building alterations, for primarily municipal and industrial clients; most frequently for water and wastewater infrastructure projects. Key objectives for this position will be to:

  • Support delivery of architectural design projects for our municipal and industrial clients
  • Work in a peer relationship with multi-disciplinary engineering teams
  • Support knowledge growth and professional development within our North American architectural team, and
  • Serve as design manager to coordinate multi-disciplinary engineering teams for small to mid-size projects.

Responsibilities of the position will be but are not limited to:

Architect

  • Assisting Senior Architect by performing the routine aspects for architectural assignments
  • Performing design calculations, sketches and technical comparisons
  • Reviewing and editing project specifications
  • Preparing and editing designs and drawings recommended by Senior Architect
  • Preparing portions of project documents
  • Researching code and regulatory requirements
  • Researching design options, component specifications and document findings for Senior Architect and Job Manager
  • Responding to contractor's questions and preparing alternate designs as needed under the guidance of Senior Architect
  • Performing analysis and design retrofit of new and existing facilities

Design Manager

  • Leading and/or supporting project teams both in the office and in the field on projects associated primarily with industrial/municipal infrastructure improvements, wastewater treatment, transportation (roads/rail/aviation), etc.
  • Development of project design documents, feasibility study reports, client proposals, project schedules, health and safety documents purchase orders, and vendor invoicing
  • Coordinating multidiscipline project engineering/design teams for small to mid-size projects
  • Manage project budget and schedule for design team
  • Oversee the engineering schedule in collaboration with the Project Manager and design discipline leads
  • Lead design coordination meetings and address critical issues that impact external partners
  • Work closely with the engineering group to facilitate decision-making related to design, the choice of process and equipment, and day-to-day problems
  • Ensure the client's requirements including specifications and standards are integrated into the project
  • Ensure quality controls processes are being followed
  • Serve as liaison between the site and engineering disciplines during construction and oversee the review of shop drawings

In this role you will use your professional experience and technical skills to:

  • Collaborate with our group of Engineers to develop building designs that balance the technical requirements of mechanical processes with the priority of providing safe, convenient and comfortable work environments
  • Develop designs that adapt to existing contexts of various character, including rural communities, developed industrial sites and historic neighborhoods
  • Propose construction systems appropriate to community context, interior environments that are frequently challenging to the durability of building materials, and project goals for sustainable and resilient design
  • Illustrate and present design alternatives using two-dimensional graphic and three-dimensional modeling tools to both project teams and clients
  • Provide coherent and persuasive language, along with statements of probable construction cost, to deliverables such and Preliminary Engineering Reports and Basis of Design statements
  • Ensure successful implementation of proposed designs and systems by providing constructable details and biddable specifications
  • Organize your own work as well as the team's to efficiently develop and deliver contract documents including drawings and specifications
  • Serve as a critical team resource for compliance with building codes, energy codes and OSHA requirements; and provide mentorship to the architecture team in understanding and applying these requirements
  • Provide construction phase project support

For success in this position, you will need the following qualifications and skills:

  • Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in Architecture accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB)
  • Minimum of 4 year's experience in the design of commercial, industrial, and municipal buildings
  • Ability to communicate both conceptual designs and construction details in two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms
  • Working knowledge of BIM and CADD platforms such as Revit, AutoCAD and SketchUp
  • Working knowledge of 3D scanning and data processing techniques
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with multi-discipline Engineering teams to meet project objectives
  • Willingness and ability to travel to project sites and client meetings as needed (primarily day trips)
