The contractor is responsible for supporting and witnessing ILLUMA-T testing at the payload, ground, and mission level. This includes integration and testing (I&T) with mission partners Laser Communication Relay Demonstration (LCRD), Massachussettes Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory (MIT-LL), and the International Space Station (ISS). This position has vital roles in mission readiness tests (MRT), end-to-end tests (ETE), mission simulations, launch, activation, and operations. ILLUMA-T is a major step forward placing Laser Comm on the ISS!
This position requires technical expertise in performing flight system integration and testing, mission readiness, and mission operations; where mission is defined as interactions between the flight segment and ground segment. A successful mission I&T engineer will demonstrate a broad and in-depth knowledge of the systems engineering process for space flight missions, including an understanding of NASA and GSFC systems engineering directives and GSFC-STD-1000 GOLD rules. The position needs a self-starter with leadership skills, organization, ability to prioritize, strong writing skills and appropriate personnel interactions.
The Mission I&T Engineer shall perform duties under direction of the ILLUMA-T Project Manager and their deputy and will coordinate with the ILLUMA-T Payload Systems Engineers, Safety Mission Assurance, and ILLUMA-T Ground Segment Manager.
The Mission I&T Engineer shall provide support in the following areas:
- Provide rolling assessments of the ILLUMA-T mission test program.
- Bring forward risks due to testing being de-scoped or experiencing test failures
- Confirm mission level requirements are tested and verified prior to launch
- Continually assess and suggest re-prioritization of test activities to maintain schedule and to achieve ILLUMA-T objectives.
- Coordinate, recommend, and prioritize testing activities based on test results and schedule.
- Participate in technical meetings: technial interchange meetings (TIMs), working groups (WG), Test Readiness Reviews (TRRs), NASA milestone reviews
- Participate in project support meetings: schedule, staffing, strategy
- Assess results of each mission test event, recommend consent to break, and run test debrief.
- Lead development of standard operating procedures (SOP)
- Track mission level technicalities: systems discrepancies, requirement verification and artifact collection, operator certification and readiness
- Support ILLUMA-T launch and early orbit (L&EO) planning and execution activities
- Assist in the planning for ILLUMA-T experiment operations
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in a STEM related field required.
EXPERIENCE: Five years experience in conducting Integration and Test for space systems, preferably with experience leading Integration and Test teams. Strong experience writing and executing test procedures. Familiarity with GSFC Gold Rules and procedures
