Job Description

Our Mission at Scythe
Humanity has lost touch with nature - we’ve traded dirt and trees for asphalt, and we rely on loud, polluting, gas-powered machines to care for our limited natural spaces.

Scythe is forging a new future by building intelligent, all-electric machines that unlock a new superpower: the ability to care for the outdoors pollution-free at enormous scale. From today’s first steps in landscape maintenance to full-fledged re-terraforming in the future, Scythe is pioneering autonomous machinery that supports the ingenuity of humans, multiplying our power to nurture our planet.

At Scythe, you’ll work with a team of world-class experts in everything from computer vision to mechanical engineering, pushing the limits of possibility and growing by overcoming hurdles along the way.

The world needs what we’re building—come join us in making it a reality.
Mobile Robotics Lead at Scythe

At Scythe, we're bringing an industry-leading autonomous battery-powered mower to market that runs on a powerful single-board computer with a custom software stack running everything from sensor interaction, to autonomy, to the cloud, and user interactions. The Mobile Robotics Lead is the ideal position for someone who has extensive experience as a software developer and finding solutions to real world problems, and can use their experiences to manage the functional requirements to achieve success for the mobile robotics team. This team is responsible for safe, reliable, and efficient operations of an autonomous mower. The fields of focus for the mobile robotics team are perception, localization, motion planning, and controls.

We expect you to be broadly experienced to be able to “see around corners”, to thrive in a fast-paced, self-managed engineering environment, and to be a collaborative, low-ego teammate who helps Scythe realize its big mission.

What you’ll do at Scythe

The key jobs for this role include:

  • Hiring: the full loop from identifying gaps in our talent, determining a viable path forward with leadership and/or finance, generating job descriptions, interviewing and bringing in interviewers, and making informed hiring decisions.
  • Engagement of Team: maintaining regular meetings with each team member to ensure they have a reasonable workload and the support they need to be successful.
  • Mentorship: you'll play a crucial role in guiding and developing engineers to reach their full potential, helping them overcome challenges and achieve their professional goals.
  • Best Practices: encourage learning and enforcement of high-quality coding standards, with a heavy focus on maintaining low computational cost.

It's also important to highlight that this is not a project manager role. The focus is instead to acquire and most efficiently utilize a talented team for long-run success. You must be a people person.

What you know well

  • Managed teams of 10 with a mix of senior and junior engineers on real-world products.
  • Represented an engineering team in a company alongside non-engineering teams.
  • Skilled at identifying hires with strong potential or critical flaws.
  • Proficiency in software development in a complex language environment. Including testing, analytics, and software quality processes.
  • This is an advanced team. Mathematical concepts such as geometry, linear algebra, graph theory, probability theory, and statistics are needed to communicate with team members.

What you’ve maybe done

  • Wrote software that ran in real-time on mobile robots (e.g. perception, localization, motion planning/controls)
  • Worked with ROS and its communication scheme and/or modern networked systems
  • Have familiarity with databases like SQLite
  • Ensured other professionals were following coding/version control standards

Why Scythe?

  • Scythe is an early-stage but well-capitalized startup. Have a huge impact alongside an awesome team of experts shipping something the world has never before seen
  • Competitive salary and equity compensation
  • Fully-sponsored medical, vision, and dental insurance, including 75% funded dependent coverage
  • 401(k) retirement plan (non-matching today)
  • Headquarters near beautiful Boulder, CO. Enjoy the bounties of nature and open spaces close to home with mountain biking, hiking, skiing and more.
  • Satellite offices in Austin, TX, and Vero Beach, FL
  • Flexible paid time-off and remote work to let you do your best work where and when you want
  • Highly collaborative learning culture where personal freedom, growth, and responsibility are valued
  • An opportunity to have an incredibly positive impact on the world
