At N250, we work across the Joint Staff and the Combatant Commands in collaboration with the Services, Department of Defense, national and military intelligence organizations, and interagency partners to support current and future operations and to help prepare the Joint Force for globally integrated operations through outcome- and data-driven engineering, recommendations, and solutions.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Transform highly technical content into professional, digestible work products, emphasizing clear, concise, original writing supported by credible, reliable sources and valuable recommendations.
  • Assist technical staff in producing work products that our sponsors want to use.
  • Develop and maintain quality document creation and delivery processes in support of the Division's vision and goals.
  • Edit work products for both content (completeness, accuracy, and appropriate language) and form (organization, visual design, and usability) with high attention to detail.
  • Implement MITRE's style guide and citation preferences across all deliverables but be adaptable to sponsor-specific style guides as needed.
  • Develop and communicate standard knowledge management processes for N250 work products: identifying, organizing, and storing information for discovery and re-use across MITRE.
  • Upload formal, key, and other identified work products to the MITRE Product Library (MPL).
  • Maintain a deliverables tracker and provide quarterly business intelligence updates to Division leadership.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor of Arts (BA) or a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree with 5 years of experience; or 3 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step
  • A minimum of three years as a technical writer/editor, communications specialist, or in a primary role organizing, writing, and reviewing program documentation.
  • Secret level security clearance or the ability to obtain and maintain (with the target clearance of Top Secret/SCI).
  • Is located near a MITRE location that supports accessing a classified environment.
  • Firm understanding of a document delivery lifecycle (requirement, creation, peer review, tech edit, delivery and distribution, retention).
  • Skilled with using Microsoft Office products (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel) to develop easy-to-use templates.
  • Ability to evaluate and edit the content, structure, and format of a range of written material (e.g., technical reports, briefings, spreadsheets, white papers).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to convey concerns and provide constructive feedback to authors with grace and respect.
  • Capable of discerning the best format to support the message, setting writing goals with appropriate levels of effort and deadlines, and maintaining continuity of message through frequent communication with the team.
  • Understand key writing concepts like tone, audience, technical depth, and voice, and be able to incorporate that into the draft process at any phase of the document lifecycle.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, communications, professional writing, journalism, or a related discipline.
  • Five or more years as a technical writer/editor or communications specialist.
  • Knowledge of our sponsors' organizations and missions, the role of the Joint Staff, Combatant Commands, and Military Service Components, operational environments, threats, and complexities.
  • Familiarity with a variety of writing guides/styles, particularly MITRE's preferred editorial guidelines: Associated Press (AP) style and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) citation practices.
  • Capable of understanding technical concepts and translating complex topics into digestible text.
  • Able to effectively work independently or as a team member.
  • Strong time management skills emphasizing flexibility in response to constantly shifting project schedules and delivery deadlines.
  • Active TS/SCI

Salary compensation range and midpoint:

$86,000 - $107,500 - $129,000 Annual
