Job Description

Job Description
A division of Huntington Ingalls Industries
Come join HII! Where hard stuff is done right!

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Modeling and Simulation Group as a Naval Architect to support our rapidly expanding classes of autonomous vessels. As HII Unmanned Systems continues to push the boundaries of multi-domain autonomy, one of our primary focuses is the architecture of our underwater vehicles to meet the challenges of their missions. The Naval Architect will perform naval architecture responsibilities on new autonomous platform designs from development, to integration, and testing, while keeping in consideration the platform life cycle needs, through manufacturing, fielding, and sustainment. They will also carry out computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses to assess and characterize vehicle designs and enable more robust vehicle simulation capability.

What you will do

Performs routine naval architecture work requiring application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of design and/or analyses of ship hull, foundation, superstructure, arrangements and hull form characteristics tasks. As directed, applies selected techniques and procedures to assignments involving ship design and ship performance analyses. Assists in the solution of difficult problems involved in areas of assignment. Uses prescribed methods to perform specific and limited portions of broader systems design, performance analyse, or hull form characteristic assignments of more experienced naval architects. • Experience in development of marine platforms: hull form, structural strength, stability, weight, speed, ship motion, trim, seaworthiness, and power and endurance.
  • Experience in calculating hydrostatics including maintaining weight and balance databases for vehicles/platforms
  • Familiar with use of equilibrium polygons
  • Experience in calculating hydrodynamics including resistance (drag), propulsion, and stability and control
  • Experience in determination of size, shape, and location of platform equipment (payloads, sensors, machinery, etc.)

Modeling and Analysis:
  • Experience using CFD Tools: Solidworks, Star CCM, OpenFOAM, FINE
  • Experience providing mature CFD support: identify the proper simulation configuration for a given problem, effective simulation set-up, simulation execution, and perform analysis on the results for the given problem.
  • Code development experience (C++/Python/MATLAB)
  • Design of experiments for simulation/tank/at-sea testing
  • Experience characterizing the performance of hull, propeller, and fin designs for replication in a simulation environment
  • Technical writing experience
