Job Summary

This position develops and implements all NERC certification and compliance training required to ensure NIPSCO complies with Federal and State regulatory requirements. Also engages Transmission Operations, Generation Dispatch, Dispatcher Operators, Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP), and Operations Support teams to deliver training support as needed. 

This position adheres to FERC, NERC, RF, and MISO guidelines and ensures that any relevant NiSource policies are embedded into any of the NIPSCO training that is developed and delivered.

This position will be filled as an Engineer or Specialist depending on degree and experience.

NERC Training Engineer I / Specialist I

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ability to complete Compliance Trainer training program within six months (involves basic math, electric engineering principles, electric grid operation, training design & administration, and NERC compliance training)

Upon Completion of Training Program:

  • Facilitates all training activities in accordance with Federal and State regulatory requirements, as well as NERC, RF, and MISO rules and guidelines
  • Develops and implements computer-based training in support of NIPSCO annual training plan
  • Supports NIPSCO Training activities with internal and external organizations as required
  • Maintains working knowledge of the NIPSCO Electric System and provides training in lessons learned activities
  • Develops training to support the maintenance and improvement of systems and software programs used by NERC Compliance, CIP Compliance, Operations Technology, and Compliance Training.
  • Supports Compliance Training personnel during collection of training data requested by any State or Federal agency.
  • Maintains training documentation in support of NERC standard PER-005
  • Reviews and develops new course content as needed.
  • Evaluates training effectiveness and implements changes as needed.
  • Complies with all NERC training requirements and ethics policies.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Occasional travel required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Business, Information Technology or Education. Candidates will be considered with significant utility experience.
  • Ability to gain knowledge of basic engineering/technical theories and principles.
  • Ability to gain knowledge of the NIPSCO Electric System, including Generation, Transmission Operations, Operations Planning, and Dispatch Operations.
  • Ability to use the Microsoft Office suite, Articulate Storyline, Adobe Pro, technical writing skills, comprehension of technical operating procedures.
  • Ability to create and deliver presentations to various audiences.
  • Instructional Design or Curriculum Development experience.
  • Excellent PC skills. Knowledge and ability to learn proprietary software, engineering computer applications and simulators.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Ability to work and make decisions autonomously.

Preferred for Selection:

  • Prior experience in electric transmission, generation or distribution operations. 
  • NERC System Operator certification.
  • Knowledge of NERC and FERC Standards and Guidelines.
  • Previous training experience, strong Electric Operations and computer application background.
  • Working knowledge of training methodologies utilizing computer modeling and simulation. 
  • Articulate Storyline and Adobe experience.

NERC Training Engineer II / Specialist II

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • All of the duties and responsibilities for NERC Training Engineer I / Specialist I including:
  • Contributes meaningful improvements in training delivery, training content, or processes and procedures.
  • Leads small- to medium- impact departmental training development projects.
  • Function in the role of Subject Matter Expert (SME) during Audits.
  • Participate in gathering and maintaining evidence for Audits.
  • Plan and facilitate drills.
  • Conduct Instructor-led training sessions.
  • Facilitate internal and external system training drills including seasonal MISO drills
  • Participates in maintaining NIPSCO annual training plan and training catalogue

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of electric utility experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of NERC and FERC Standards and Guidelines.
  • Ability to create and deliver presentations to various audiences.
  • Strong understanding of basic engineering/technical theories and principles.
  • Good knowledge of the NIPSCO Electric System, including Generation, Transmission Operations, Operations Planning, and Dispatch Operations.
  • Proven Instructional Design or Curriculum Development experience.
  • Experience performing tasks using Microsoft Office suite, Articulate Storyline, and Adobe Pro.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and make decisions autonomously.

Preferred for Selection:

  • Prior experience in electric transmission, generation, and distribution operations. 
  • NERC System Operator certification.
  • Understanding of principles of project management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of training methodologies utilizing computer modeling and simulation. 
  • Articulate Storyline and Adobe experience.

NERC Training Engineer III / Specialist III

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Proficient in performing all responsibilities for NERC Training Engineer / Specialist II including:
  • Manages large projects including task analysis, gap analysis, program development and management, and training documentation management
  • Leads audit preparation and acts as senior SME for audits
  • Lead new initiatives and projects representing the Compliance Training group.
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and training to other employees in group
  • Actively work on continuous process improvement by developing and implementing new processes, procedures and training.
  • Primary point of contact / program manager for training programs
  • Lead discussions on curating training catalogue
  • Develops and submits ILAs for NERC CEHs
  • Liaison between MISO and NIPSCO training teams
  • Maintains internal processes and procedures

Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of electric utility experience.
  • NERC System Operator certification
  • Strong knowledge of NERC and FERC Standards and Guidelines.
  • Excellent ability to create and deliver presentations to various audiences.
  • Strong understanding of engineering/technical theories and principles.
  • Proficient in dealing with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong knowledge of the NIPSCO Electric System, including Generation, Transmission Operations, Operations Planning, and Dispatch Operations.
  • Demonstrated Instructional Design and Curriculum Development experience.
  • Proficiency in performing tasks using the Microsoft Office suite, Articulate Storyline, Adobe Pro, technical writing skills, comprehension of technical operating procedures.

Preferred for Selection:

  • Project management experience.
  • PMP Certification.

NERC Training Engineer IV / Specialist IV

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Proficient in performing all responsibilities for NERC Training Engineer / Specialist III including:
  • Lead development of new training initiatives.
  • Lead cross-departmental training development efforts by developing, coordinating and implementing training that supports new processes and procedures for the business areas we support.
  • Evaluates and manages departmental training programs for improvement, consistency, and quality.
  • Engages cross-functional teams to develop department-wide training programs for internal and external organizations.
  • Manages training catalogue.

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of electric utility experience.
  • Strong knowledge of NERC and FERC Standards and Guidelines.
  • Strong knowledge of NERC and FERC Standards and Guidelines.
  • Excellent ability to create and deliver presentations to various audiences.
  • Strong understanding of engineering/technical theories and principles.
  • Proficient in dealing with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong knowledge of the NIPSCO Electric System, including Generation, Transmission Operations, Operations Planning, and Dispatch Operations.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Extensive Instructional Design or Curriculum Development experience.
  • Proficiency in performing tasks using the Microsoft Office suite, Articulate Storyline, Adobe Pro, technical writing skills, comprehension of technical operating procedures. 
  • Demonstrated leadership within NIPSCO. 
  • Ability to produce exceptional work with minimal supervision.

Preferred for Selection:

  • NERC System Operator certification.
  • Proven project management experience.
  • Extensive experience leading new training initiatives and projects.
  • Previous experience leading cross-departmental training development efforts by developing, coordinating and implementing training that supports new processes and procedures for the business areas we support.
  • PMP Certification.

Salary Range:

$65,900.00 - $160,500.00
