What You’ll Do

  • Design and build the datacenter, backbone, and cloud networks that run the Braintree Platform
  • Ideate and innovate brand-new, and next generation cloud native connectivity methods in AWS and GCP

  • Operate and automate our world-wide networks spanning multiple datacenters, cloud regions, and backbone points of presence across multiple continents
  • Partner with our customers (product engineering teams) on their products design, development, and capacity planning to ensure Braintree continues to scale and maximize availability.
  • Brainstorm and implement ways of reducing tech debt, automate repeated manual tasks and improve team productivity.
  • Ensure sufficient logging, monitoring and alerting strategies around availability, latency, and overall system health.
  • Scale systems sustainably through automation and evolve systems by pushing for changes that improve reliability and velocity.
  • Be part of incident reviews and blameless post-mortems.
  • Mentor other members of the organization through their career journey at Braintree.

What We’re Looking For

  • Networking and infrastructure background with ability to analyze and improve existing architecture.
  • Experience with building solutions both on premise and in the Cloud (Ideally AWS)
  • Experience with Unix/Linux operating systems internals and administration.
  • Established experience with monitoring/logging tools and best practices.
  • Established ability to diagnose technical problems, debug code, and automate routine tasks.
  • Experience in one or more of the following: Java, Ruby, Golang, or shell scripting.
  • Familiarity with orchestration tools (Ansible, Puppet, Terraform, etc.).
  • Experience with modern distributed version control (e.g. git).
  • Ability to support a 24/7/365 always available production grade service.
  • Patience and fortitude to work complex issues in production systems
  • Great analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and spoken.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3-5 Years+ Experience in Large-Scale Production Environments
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Comparable Experience
  • Industry Technical Certification (Cisco, Juniper, Amazon Web Services, or Google Cloud)

Within 1 month, you will:

  • Contribute to our Agile culture of continuous improvement through retrospective meetings and experimentation-oriented thinking.
  • Work with your team to create and prioritize quarterly roadmap goals.
  • Build connections with members from other teams through guild projects.
  • Participate in technical design meetings with your teammates to walk through new feature ideas.
  • Be the first line of defense against product outages while on support duty.
  • Maintain and build upon systems that handle hundreds of thousands of transactions a day.
  • Begin participating in on-call support rotations

Within 6 months, you will:

  • Contribute significantly to a major datacenter refresh initiative

  • Build your engineering skills by attending in-house presentations, workshops, and training sessions.
  • Partner with the team to improve your team’s ability to deliver reliable, highly available services.

Within 12 months, you will:

Whenever possible, we want to provide our team with the flexibility to work in the location that makes the most sense for them. For those that prefer an office setting, this role may be based in our Chicago, Austin, or Scottsdale locations.
