Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under supervision, assists in and/or performs standard neurophysiology testing procedures to ensure the department is providing high quality services in an efficient manner and is able to operate in fulfilling its mission.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
- Prepares patients prior to testing to ensure high quality studies are obtained.
- Obtains a thorough patient medical history and reviews to determine and plan proper procedures to be used during specific testing, at times questioning patient directly to obtain additional information in a timely manner.
- Measures and marks head according to the International 10-20 System and marks all other applicable anatomical locations to ensure proper placement of electrodes in a timely manner.
- Checks integrity of electrodes prior to testing to ensure high quality performance, replacing with new electrodes as needed in a timely manner.
- Applies electrodes to sites using proper method of application, using pre-determined electrode placements, within a maximum period of 45 minutes. Determines application methodology (paste or collodion) after individual assessment of testing procedures.
- Calibrates the recording instrument and documents the recording parameters prior to testing to ensure the proper function of the recording system in a timely manner, as observed by supervisor. Cleans and performs minor maintenance on equipment as needed and reports all major repairs to chief technologist.
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate the age groups of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients regularly served.
- Notifies supervisor when patients in age groups not regularly served are present, and seeks assistance from individuals with the knowledge of the specialized needs of such patient age groups.
- Operates selected equipment to acquire neurophysiology data for interpretation by departmental physicians to ensure quality studies in accordance with all applicable policies, procedures and processional standards.
- Performs standard electrocephalographic procedures with related physiologic monitoring, at times to include additional electrode placement in an efficient yet variable time frame.
- Observes waveforms from long-term ambulatory and video telemetry monitoring and operates playback systems to selectively display information for physician interpreting the study in an efficient yet variable time frame.
- Documents all required and pertinent patient information on all recordings
- Attempts to eliminate artifacts of non physiological nature from all recordings and monitors physiologic artifact when possible.
- Transports patients or selected equipment to various locations within the hospital as necessary. Performs testing in other departments as necessary.
- Participates in educational developments within the laboratory to ensure the organizations ability to provide state-of-the-art services.
- Attends and participates in appropriate training and development workshops as scheduled by the organization with a minimum of 1 per year.
- Attends appropriate professional association meetings on a periodic basis as resources are available.
- Maintains and shows appropriate knowledge of current development in the field.
- Provides office support when necessary to ensure the efficient operation of the department.
- Answers telephones in a pleasant, courteous and timely manner identifying the department
- Greets visitors to the department in a courteous and timely manner and answers inquiries and directs or escorts visitors to the appropriate personnel or area.
- Monitors levels of laboratory supplies to ensue par levels are maintained and reports low volume to supervisor.
- Completes and forwards charge slips for patient billing. Performs related clerical duties as needed, such as scheduling appointments, filing, etc.,.
- Follows hospital standards of performance and conduct so that the best possible customer service and patient care may be provided.
- Fosters interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, physicians and fellow employees are fostered in a courteous and friendly manner.
- Maintains patient confidentiality. Maintains work are and equipment in condition as required by department standards.
- Utilizes hospital's Values as the basis for decision-making and to facilitate the division's hospital mission.
- Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures. Performs other duties as needed.
EDUCATION:
Requires in addition to the knowledge normally acquired through a high school education, additional technical training normally acquired through an Associate's Degree in EEG Technology or equivalent.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
Prefer ABRET certification eligibility.
EXPERIENCE:
Requires a minimum of one month on-the-job training to become familiar with department policies and procedures.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Must acquire and effectively utilize ability to read graphs to distinguish abnormal characteristics, and detect artifacts.
Requires interpersonal skills sufficient to effectively interact with ill patients explain procedures and allay fears.
